Staffordshire, who were beaten semi-finalists in last season's National Under-20 Championship, had to settle for a 15-15 draw with Cambridge University in their opening game in this season's competition at Grange Road this afternoon.
A late opportunist try from replacement scrum-half Ben Robson of Longton earned Staffordshire a share of the spoils against a Cambridge side who bounced back quickly from their defeat by Leicestershire in their opening game on Wednesday.
Robson took a quick tapped penalty when Cmbridge expected Staffordshire to kick for touch and sneaked over for an unconverted try that secured the draw.
Staffordshire, who were beaten by Devon in last season's semi-finals, scored another try through flanker Joe Carpenter (Willenhall) and fly-half Luke Massey of Lichfield added the conversion followed by a penalty.
Cambridge also scored two tries through flanker Tom Stanton and loosehead prop Alex Cheetham with fly-half Aaron Sonenfeld adding a conversion and a penalty.
