Introduction
This page
provides information for CB Welfare Managers / Club Welfare Officers on how to set up and run the Child Welfare Training Courses on their patch / at their club.
The Courses
There are two courses:
Safeguarding and Protecting Young People in
Rugby
Club Safeguarding Officer Workshop
Safeguarding and Protecting Young People in

How long is the course?
Three hour course which can be run in evenings or at weekends
Who runs tutors the course?
Trained RFU Welfare Tutors
Who organises the course?
The course organiser will be the CB Welfare Manager
Who is the course for?
In general terms the course is for any member of staff or volunteers who is working with or has responsibility for children and young people (players under the age of 18 years)
within rugby, from club to international level…e.g.:

Professional Staff
·
All coaches/assistant coaches
·
Heads of Mini/Midi Rugby sections
·
Heads of Youth
Rugby
Sections
·
Team Managers
·
All Referees who manage mini/midi and youth games
·
Welfare Officers
·
Physiotherapists
·
Club administrators
·
CB volunteers with responsibility for young people
·
Volunteers and staff within schools and education
What are the outcomes of the course?
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
Identify best practice within
Rugby
Identify signs and indicators of possible abuse and poor practice
State action to take if there is a concern or disclosure
Know where to find support within the RFU
Recognise their role in safeguarding and protecting young people within rugby
How much does the course cost?
£15 per person
What does the participant receive from attending the course?
Workshop resource

Club Safeguarding Officer Workshop
How long is the course?
Four hour course which can be run as either a four hour course or two x two hour courses over evenings or at weekends
Who runs tutors the course?
Trained RFU Welfare Tutors
Who organises the course?
The course organiser will be the CB Welfare Manager
Who is the course for?
Club Welfare Officers
What are the outcomes of the course?
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
To define and explain the role and responsibility of a RFU Club Welfare Officer
To identify the roles of club members to promote welfare and good practice
To identify good practice when recruiting new volunteers into the club
To design a club implementation plan
To use the RFU Policy and Handbook to manage disclosures
How much does the course cost?
£15 per person
What does the participant receive from attending the course?
Certificate of attendance
CWOs will need to bring with them their Club Welfare Handbook
(If they do not have a copy of this they need to contact the RFU Child Protection Officer)
Please Note -
If a delegate has attended the SPYP course and needs to attend the CWOW, the CWOW will be free to the delegate as long as they attend the course within 6 months of the SPYP course.
Experienced Welfare Officers who have not attended a Child Protection Course since 2005 will be able to attend the CWOW upon the recommendation of the CB Welfare Manager. If, however, a new Club Welfare Officer is appointed without the relevant experience, they will need to attend both courses.
Venue and Equipment
Minimum Standards for the workshops venue:
A room which can accommodate all participants and allow for break out group work
Chairs for all participants
Flip chart and flip chart paper
Laptop Projector
PLEASE NOTE
If the course is run in a club bar – the bar must remain closed throughout the duration of the course
Course Promotion
The course organiser needs to promote the course within the local area
The course will be promoted on the RFU web site
Details of courses have been circulated to all RFU RDOs and CB Welfare Managers.
