Old Wheatleyans 22 – 23 Coventry Saracens
Wheats Hearts Torn (like the new shirts will be in 2 weeks, max).
The much awaited arrival of the new kit did nothing to improve Old Wheats recent form.
From a game that Wheats should have won by 30+ points they once again took nothing away & managed to throw away a comfortable victory in the last play of the game (again!).
Although off to a slow start, thanks to a great solo effort from centre Jamie Keenan the Wheats scored 7 early points followed by a well worked backs move to put full back Marc Rubery in. 12-0 up, no real threat from the opposition – time to sit back & make things interesting – half time 12-10.
Coventry Saracens came out into the 2nd half with a belief they could win this game, however another try from Jamie Keenan and a penalty from Richard East gave the Wheats a comfortable lead at 22-10 with 20 minutes to go. Again, rather than capitalise and take the game to the opposition the Wheats sat back on their lead & found themselves just 22-18 up in the last play of the game, a mis-understanding at a Wheats lineout lead to a 30m run-in for Cov Saras back row forward to seal a victory that their spirit and determination deserved.
Results have not gone the way of the Wheats so far this season and luck has certainly not been on their side. With Adam Mason receiving a suspected dislocated collar bone, the Wheats are however still managing to do their bit to keep the NHS & Steel industry in business.
MOTM: Jamie Keenan (if he was a bit fitter though he could have had two more tries).
