Trinity Guild 28 – 17 Old Wheatleyans
The Wheats were once again left scratching their heads after losing yet another game they could have comfortably won had they turned up with a little more confidence & a lot more passion.

8 changes were made to the side that had started the previous game but with Richard East, Jamie Keenan and Brad Atkins returning to the back-line and Joe Loach coming into the front row things looked promising, apart from a few mole hills on the pitch.
However, the game got off to a terrible start with the Guild scoring 2 excellent penalties to make the score 6-0 before the Wheats had even touched the ball. Back-row forward Eggy had to retire from the game shortly after due to a groin injury incurred during the warm-up. Although the scrum was put under enormous pressure the Wheats then managed to camp in the Guild half for long periods but were unable to get on the score board. After 50 or 60 scrums the Guild found themselves on the Wheats line with a 5m scrum, the Guild front row was too strong and a converted try followed. Not long after, the Guild kicked deep into the Wheats half and from a resultant scrum their centre went through the usually watertight Wheats backline to score under the posts for 7 more. Somehow the score was 20-0 and still the Wheats had not properly woken up. Just before half time a penalty was missed by the usually reliable Beast.
The second half proved a different story once again, the Wheats woke up and realised they were more than capable of matching the opposition. John Betts charged down a Guild clearance and used some length to pick up for his first try of the season. Conversion wide. The Wheats were now lifted and scored two more tries, one of which was an excellent solo effort from Brad Atkins, who with a bit more confidence will soon return to his outstanding best.
With a win now in sight at 20-17 and plenty of time on the clock, the Wheats decided that just to make things a little harder and more interesting they would relax a little, unfortunately the Guild capitalised on this and scored a penalty and a soft try to make the score 28-17. With the scrum under enormous pressure the Wheats then struggled to gain any real possession and the Guild cruised to a win they deserved – especially for their scrummaging.
Having to make 8 changes week to week is not going to help the side gain momentum, but as ever the Wheats had some enjoyable moments and played some reasonable rugby, still only at 30% of potential though.
MOTM: Rubes for turning up sober & taking some excellent high balls.
