Coventry Tech 17 - 0 Old Wheatleyans
Old Wheatleyans put up a decent display against a well drilled Mids 5 Tech side that profited from favourable conditions in the first half. Wheats were happy to welcome back old face Steve Johns, and new face Rich Bennett. It was also pleasing to see Mr McKenzie had recovered fully from what Dr Scan had originally diagnosed as a "broken everything" suffered in the previous league game.
Despite the lion’s share of territory and possession Tech were unable to make an impression in the opening minutes of the game. The Wheats 8 seemed steady in the scrum, and in the line Ross was taking his fair share of ball jumping at number 2. AB and Greg were steady with the kicks, and to be honest Tech did not look a real threat for the first 15 minutes or so, for all their possession.
So the opening try after about 25 minutes came as a disappointment to Wheats who had defended fairly solidly. Tech managed to suck in backs to the breakdown before slinging it out wide to their right and a favourable matchup of backs vs forward. The resulting conversion from wide right was missed. 5-0.
Tech only managed to add one more try in the first half, as the Wheats line and scrum managed to continue to take ball against the head to deny Tech in crucial positions.

Half time 10 – 0
Of course the force 10 gale stopped as soon as the ref blew his whistle to start the second half. Though Tech still seemed to want Wheats to win, showing some good indiscipline when they went down to 14 men following some handbag inspections in the forwards.
Wheats managed to get more attacking ball in the second half, and Rubery was solid under the high ball at full back.
Unfortunately Wheats couldn’t seem to get the hands right and were guilty of taking the wrong options too often, as well as not getting the breaks and bounces when they really needed them. Wheats best move of the match came from some good offloading from Whetton and Haddo down the right, which was only foiled by some desperate last ditch tackling from Tech.
It wouldn't be a game without seeing the Adonis in the pack, and so it was when Dean Bryant came into the centre in the second half, Jas effortlessly making the transition from centre to front row. Bryant nearly made the immediate impact he'd been dreaming of - with a 30 yard scamper which penetrated the Tech 22, but which was ultimately snuffed out like his half time B&H.
When it came, Tech’s third try was as contentious as AB’s old mohawk, as Wheats felt it may have been held up over the line, but the ref had no hesitation in awarding a try which was subsequently converted.
At no-side 17 - 0.
