Warwickians 13 – 3 Old Wheatleyans
New Year ………… Same Old Story!
After wading half a mile through a swamp the Old Wheats arrived on the “pitch”, the grass length exceeded that of Gillhams & Drurys hair combined. So a boggy pitch, complete with outrageous mole hills, few markings & grass taller than some of the players it was sure to be a great day for rugger!
There were 8 changes to the side from the last league game before xmas, 5 of them in the backs (leaving 3 changes in the forwards for those of you not that good a maths). Jas W & Joe Loach returned to the front row with Nr 8 Greevy coming into the back row for his 2nd game of the season. Dean Bryant, Jamie Keenan, Adam Brittain, and Ant Webb returned to the back-line, Ben Weaver made his league debut this season on the wing & genuinely became the 50th player to represent the side during 10 league games this year. For being the person to achieve this milestone Ben wins ……. a bottle of Scan’s used talcum powder.

After the referee spent some time debating with himself as to whether the pitch was playable the game got off to a totally unmemorable start. Half-Time 8-0 to Warwickians who generally had more of the pill during the period. Their try came from some sloppy defending at the base of a ruck. The Wheats missed a 4 on 1 chance with Macca, who had an excellent game in the second row, choosing the head down bull route (obviously thinking he was at home in bed with his good lady).
The second half was pretty much as unmemorable as the first, the Wheats struck a penalty 10mins in to make it 8-3 and were enjoying more of the possession, however to be within one score of the opposition proved to much pressure to handle so Warwickians were immediately allowed to score following a series of comedy errors. The Wheats continued to do just enough to remain competitive but Warwickians defended well & re-cycled what ball they had to good effect.
The game ended 13-3 & is one that everyone who took part in would rather forget, in all honesty the Wheats hearts were not in the game and more commitment & aggression is needed on the field to get a much needed “W”.
Special mentions to AB, playing at 10 for the second time this year, kicking out of hand was top notch considering the pitch & to man of the match Nr 8 Greevy – a superb all round performance in attack & defence, was one of very few Wheats players on the day who was committed to the cause.
Pinley at home next week will prove a tough challenge, but with more self-belief & people making themselves available there is no reason why the Wheats cannot compete this match.
Happy New Year to all!
