Pinley 58 – 20 Old Wheatleyans
Blame it on the Ref!
At last some consistency in availability – just 5 enforced changes from the week before (this was actually a record for this season!)
The Wheats started brightly enough and spent much of the opening few minutes in the Pinley half, but failure to clear from a clever kick by the Pinley 10 gave the opposition the first score. The Wheats continued to do just enough to remain competitive but a mistake in the backs lead to Pinley scoring a break away try to make it 14-0. Shortly after a lineout inside the Pinley 22 provided a platform for the Wheats to set up a rolling maul and pushed the heavy Pinley pack over their own line and were rightly awarded a penalty try. 14-7. Gaining in confidence the Wheats spent more time in the Pinley half but wasted some good ball due to silly mistakes, Pinley were next to score with a well taken Penalty (the referee later admitting, sorry I fu&ked up – it should have been your penalty – thanks!). 18-7. Fly-half Richard East struck one back with an equally well taken penalty to make it 18-10 with half time approaching. As so many times this year when the Wheats are starting to get into a good position the opposition were allowed to score a soft try off the base of a ruck. Half Time 22-10, not necessarily a fair reflection of the game and the majority of the Pinley points had come from Wheats mistakes.
Early in the 2nd half Jamie Keenan made an excellent break from the Wheats 22 and put the returning Richard Drury in to score his second league try of the season, it is worth noting that the flying winger struggled a little to keep up with the ageing Keenan, time for a hair cut perhaps? Conversion just missed but at 22-15 it was time to take the game to Pinley, or not, - time to sit back & relax again a concede a soft try 29-15. Under a bit of pressure – time to get back in the game, winger Matt Brown at last backed himself on the outside an scored an excellent solo try to make it 29-20. Unfortunately with 20mins remaining this was to be the last score for the Wheats. With the Pinley 10 managing to control the game and the Wheats back-line defence having a very rare off day Pinley amassed 29 unanswered points in the final period. Whilst the score line was flattering Pinley deserved the 2 points and will be a tough side to beat this season.
A special mention should go to Matt Rice making his debut for the Wheats in the 2nd row. An excellent performance!
More commitment and passion is needed if the Wheats are going to get out of this current slump.
MOTM: Trussy – superb all round performance.
DOTD: Si H – for having fingers like cow’s t*ts. Clown.
