Match Report
Standard Triumph 19 - 36 Old Wheatleyans
Old Wheatleyans came into this game requiring a much needed win to get their season back on track following a disappointing defeat at Stade Wheats against Manor Park the previous week.
Wheats got just the start they didn't want conceding a try in the first five minutes of the game, unable to resist a powerful Standard pack driving over from a few yards out after Wheats failed to clear their lines effectively. The resulting conversion was missed for Standard.
The game settled down after this, with both packs fighting for dominance in the set plays. The Wheats lineout struggled to find it's timing early, and Standard disrupted effectively. Eventually the Wheats forwards slowly began to exert some pressure, securing good ball for the backs, leading to an opening try for Brad Atkins on the wing after a slick move down the line, Brad crossing in the corner. The following conversion was missed.
Some good supporting running from AB got the try which put the Wheats ahead for the first time in the match - more solid forward work up front providing ball to the backs, which went through the hands to Atkins, who was able to offload to AB allowing him to dive over in the corner. Richard East saw his conversion come back off the bar from out wide.
Standard hit back shortly after, capitalising on a dropped ball in the their half. The nippy Standard winger showed some good football skills to hack through and chase. Brad Atkins pinned his ears back in hot pursuit, making up good ground before the winger appeared to be tripped yards from the line, according to the official. Penalty try given, conversion good.
This seemed to spur Standard on with their forwards coming back into the game, giving Standard the edge in territory towards the end of the 1st half. They could count themselves unfortunate when a quickly taken lineout resulted in their full-back getting isolated and stripped of possession on the halfway line. All that was left was for Jase Whetton to race under the posts, with encouragement from Jamie Keenan running in support. Conversion was made.
Half time: Standard 12 - 17 Old Wheats
Wheats came out in the second half eager to make the result safe, and it was Wheats who got the next score, courtesy of another Jase Whetton try. The Wheats' backs attacked the spaces in broken play, and when the ball came to Whetton he neatly stepped inside a Standard defender to dot down under the posts for the second time that afternoon, Richard East added the 2 extra points.
Wheats' defence showed some improvement on the display against Manor Park the previous week, with some big tackles being made, most notably by Jamie Keenan who put in more than his fair share of hits. Standard though continued to press, and shortly after being held up over the line, ran over a try fom a tap penalty from five metres out. The try was converted, and pressure was back on with the score at 19 - 24.
Standard later went down to 14 men when the Standard tight head prop was sent to the rage cage to cool off for 10, for illegal use of the boot in a ruck. Wheats capitalised on their numerical advantage when substitute Kieran Wilde scored under the posts after some strong support running from a Richard East break, duly converted.
The result was cemented when Ian Haddridge (on for Dave Beere) linked up with Brad Atkins late in the game and was in under the posts for another converted try.
Old Wheats players left the field content with a result, but confident there's more in the tank, and look forward to improving on this performance against Clee in the EDF Junior Vase next week.
