Old Wheatleyans 15 – 32 Coventry Tech
TKO
Wheats’ first home game of the season was to not to see them register their first win of the season. A tough Cov Tech side got the better of a leaky Old Wheats’ defence in front of a near capacity crowd at the Stade.
The display from Wheats was not entirely disappointing as there were bright sparks from new players and old soldiers alike, including a great try from Olly, who outran 3 players to claim his try and another from Jase in the corner which showed that at least someone had been keeping up pre-season training. Up front things were solid in the engine room, for the most part the scrum looked very capable, and the lineout was not in any doubt all afternoon. New additions to the forwards gave Wheats a much needed injection of fight and fitness, which showed at the breakdown with the numbers present.
After half time having kept the score close Wheats were soon afforded more advantage when a late tackle on Dean at fly half saw a yellow card given to a Tech back row. Wheats couldn’t make the extra man pay though and failed to register any more points for the 10 minute duration.
In the end it was a simple case of missed tackles that proved to be the Wheats undoing. Despite managing to keep the opposition back line relatively quiet on the day, Wheats couldn’t seem to stop the Tech 8 who was having a great running game, making yards for his team and giving them a good platform to strike at the Wheats from.
Caution was abandoned as the final whistle drew near and a slippery Tech managed to register another score right at the death, leaving Wheats with no right to reply.
Big thanks to all who took part – training is on Thursday at King Henry VIII under floodlights. Make sure you are there this week, and if you can’t make it – let someone know.
