THE PIG
With a whole teams worth of players not available, the Wheats have a further excuse for recent disappointing results, including this one!
However, a side was assembled, nuts were frozen to the core and despite a pitch resembling volcanic rock the ref was happy so the game got underway.
The 1st 20mins or so were spent in the oppositions 22 but the side were clearly not that up for it (poor form!). A Bobby shot a goal was expertly directed at the post for the barrel to collect and barge through a few to set up some quick ball, Andy H received on the blindside & there was only one destination in mind – barrel was jealous of the power of the finish. 0-5. A further score was recorded with a lovely finish on the right to make it 0-10.

Warwick were allowed back in the game for the next period and scored a converted try after some very poor defending. Wheats finished the half the stronger with the ageless Ghost pouncing on loose ball and dropping over for a deserved try, Bobby striking a beauty to make it 7-17 at half time.
Despite talk of not letting the opposition back into the game, the Wheats were struggling to get any flow to their game with the breakdown just a total farce with people wandering around & flying over with no regard to the sacred laws of the game!
However, Warwick played well to their strengths, dominating the lineout and using powerful centres to hit the gain line and recycle (as Wheats failed to play to the referee’s laws). Some French flair in the Wheats 22 saw a pass dropped and gave Warwick and easy score to make it 14-17. Despite a cry of no hands - advantage Wheats, Warwick crossed the line again whilst Wheats awaited their penalty (lesson = always play to the whistle!). 21-17. The Wheats were losing their composure now and rally cries were not working, following some handy footwork on Ross a Warwick player was shown the yellow, some verbal followed from the behind the line & then a re-appearance on the field to take a cheap shot with a fist at Greg’s face followed by emergence of the coach to abuse the referee – again all within the laws.
With the referee now appearing to be justifiably intimidated, the Wheats were against it. Warwick pushed over the line, and after asking all players to move away so he could see if the ball had been grounded another try was awarded (obviously no player would move to put the ball down after the whistle had gone & and everyone had moved away!). 26-17. The Wheats put some pressure on but things weren’t sparking on the day - a Bobby penalty made it 26-20, but they could not find the final score, despite Hands & Bobby combining well to set up what could possibly have been awarded a try.
Well done to Warwick who stayed committed for the full 80mins and played some nice rugby at times.

All in all, despite moans & groans the Wheats could have put this game beyond the opposition had they take the initiative & played with a little more heart. With several star players out everyone needs to put in 100% effort for 80mins as we cannot rely on 1 or 2 individuals to finish off the scoring.
Some good lessons learnt, time to move forward with renewed excitement as with the pressure off in terms of promotion the players can really start to go and enjoy the game & with more socials planned for Feb (once everyone has more money) the aim is to finish the season on as much as a high as possible on & off the field. Training will also resume soon with venue tbc (hopefully somewhere warm!)
As always, thanks to all players & spectators!!!
On a positive note, three more new players are to be introduced into the club for next week.
