Old Wheatleyans 26 - 7 Warwickians
Parc De Wheats
The partisan Wheats faithful welcomed back Stade Wheats after the new year to their first league game of 2008.
However this wasn’t the ideal start to the new year the Wheats faithful had wanted, with a friendly game against Welsbourne the week before resulted in injuries to the skipper pig and Weaver Jnr.
To compound the misery, JK was back and bigger than ever!
The Wheats first half display was as if they hadn’t been away. The first try came from JK beating his man on the 22 only to run out of gas after 10 yards and offloaded to the ever sniping Atkins who went under the posts for the first score. The Beast chipped over for the added 2.
The next score came from what is fast becoming Loach’s trademark. Picking up the ball in the 22, he was finally stopped by 3 men however too late for Warwickians as Loach had bullocked over the line for his first score of the day. Again, The Beast was reliable. 14-0.
The Beast however was getting itchy feet and decided it was best to add his name to the score sheet, just to remind the whipper snappers who the big dog was.
The Beast ghosted over the line after a well executed double dummy, miss scissors, double top 96 check out, blue ball to middle pocket, dummy loop manoeuvre…text book! He even had the gall to knock over the conversion too!
Loach finished off the scoring for the first half with another powerful drive over the line from a quick tap penalty. The Beast missed for the first time today…bad times.
The second half was a different story altogether however. This was a much more spirited Warwickians side than the one previously faced.
They not only managed to nil the Wheats, but claim a converted score of their own.
The second half also saw AB carried off in the ‘sex chair’ (A.Lewis) due to wearing calf protectors too tight and consequently pulling both his calves due to them being too tight…idiot.
JK traditionally didn’t finish the match either after taking a heavy blow to his knee. Although he refused the sex chair, it was later realised that as Al Scott helped carry him off, this was a wise decision.
MOTM – Good to see JK back and added stability to the midfield along with some scampers, however another powerful display by The Loach capped off with a brace. Splendid.
DOTD – Gillam got nowhere near this award this week! This was soundly won by AB for not only wearing previously unknown protective kit, but this ‘protective gear’ ultimately led to his injury and removal in the ‘chair’. Rubbish xmas present!
1. J Loach – 9 In great form at present and continued it today
2. Trussy - 8.5 Another quality performance from a future Wheats man!
3. A Hibberd 8.5 Dictated in the scrum and did the dirty work at rucks and mauls
4. A Brittain 6 Silly boy! A fine line out display and mobility around the park until his kit let him down
5. R Lacey 7.5 Another quality performance in the line out and got involved at every opportunity
6. Gillam 8 Around the park, didn’t moan and was a regular threat to his own and the 10’s safety.
7. Super Hands 8 Good to see SH in the forwards again. Provided go forward ball and a platform
8. Special K 7 Too big a shirt for him to fill. Understandable though.
9. Benno 8 Vocal and at every breakdown. Quality again.
10. Beast 8.5 Masterful.
11. Browny 8 Looked for work and always busy, although really should be backing himself.
12. JK 8.5 Great to have back and adds confidence to the back line. Tubby
13. B Atkins 8 Ever weaving and great balance in the open. Good score for BBB.
14. Longman 7.5 Gave his opposite man a few things to think about. Needs to be brought into play more
15. Rubes 8 Solid under the high ball, and never missed a tackle. Text book
16. C Dennis 7.5 Never got enough time on the park, but was solid in the scrum
17. J Betts 7.5 Replaced Bomb scare Brittain and the line out didn’t falter. Strong around the park as always
