Warwickians 0 – 43 Old Wheatleyans
Good Job Done
The Wheats travelled to Warwickians & for once managed to keep the same tight 5 as the week before of Joe Loach, Macca (last game the Wheats!), Andy H, Ross & Bettsy. The back row was made up of Ben Hands, Wild Weaver, Fat Hodgkiss. Will O was back for a guest appearance @ 9 relieving a seriously ill Dean, Easty wore 10, JK & Charlie partnered up in the centre, Browny was joined on the wing by new comer Long Man & Brad played @ 15.
From the off it became apparent the Wheats were up for this game with some hard fast running & great support play.
Will O was causing the defence problems at every breakdown & scored a superb solo try to open the account. Further scores were registered in the 1st half by:
i. JK – good support play & then the old double side step.
ii. Bettsy – some great hands found the big man on the wing to dive over
iii. The Pig – snuffled his way over the line from a great rolling maul.
Half time 24-0. The scrum was operating a full capacity, the lineout was also doing extremely well. Roll on the next 40mins.
From the off Ross made a superb hit on the Warwickians prop & things looked good. Unfortunately the side lost a bit of momentum & the odd dropped pass meant only 3 tries were recorded. Charlie Hands got a couple of well deserved tries & Long Man finished superbly on the wing.
Weaver showed his usual fighting spirit throughout but managed to knock his teeth through his lip when tackling head 1st – school boy error.
Final score 43-0.
The score should have been higher, but an all round good performance, especially the 1st half which showed what hard running & good support play can achieve.
A big push once again for all players to make themselves available this week so we can field a 2nd XV also – who had an excellent 40-0 win over Warwickians 2’s.
MOTM: all players in with a shout for different reasons, but Will O was in a class of his own for the 60mins he was on the field.
DOTD: Tough call, awarded to Macca for moving to Guernsey.
Player Ratings:
- Joe Loach 9.5/10: again some great running with ball in hand, but the rest of the forwards need to keep up & offer more support at the breakdown.
- Macca: 9/10: will be seriously missed, especially after his move to hooker this year.
- Andy H: 9/10: has solidified the Wheats scrum since returning. Superb.
- Ross: 9/10: has got a lot to live upto after this almost unbelievable performance, especially his defence.
- Bettsy: 9/10: awesome lineout work again. Great vision to stand on the wing for his try
- Ben Hands: 9/10: started like a bull on heat hitting everything, tired for a little then returned to looking for hits wherever they could be found..
- Weaver: 9.25/10: could have put more pressure on the 10 & could have backed his pace to score at one point, but usual top draw performace.
- Neil H 9/10: as solid as ever. Deserved score
- Will O 9.5/10: obviously picked up some tips from Dean in recent years, great game in all aspects.
- Easty 9/10: controlled the game & out of hand kicking gained valuable yardage. Back line always looked dangerous no matter where the attacked from.
- Browny: 9/10: another big game. Good vision when taking ball off Bettsy at k.o. Also, when he didn’t back himself on the outside found Hands inside to provide him with an easy run in.
- JK: 9/10: tackled like a demon again, showed some of the old flair also.
- Charlie 9/10: took some good lines in the centre but look like a court jester at times trying to catch / pick up ball.
- Long Man: 9/10: solid under the high ball & great finish.
- Brad: 9/10 – totally reliable in all aspects. Looks very dangerous running with ball in hand again.
- Carl D: 9/10 – a good 30mins stint in the front row.
- Eastwood: 9/10 – good distribution & look forward to seeing some more.
- Dean 9.75/10 – showed the back rowers how it should be done. No messing.
