Coventry Saracens 10 – 21 Old Wheatleyans
With Saras only having lost one game this season, it looked like it was going to be hard day at the office for the Wheats.
For once, minimum changes were required to the previous week, the FR lined up with Carl, Adonis & Big Man Loach, McShame was a let down so AB came into his favoured row position for his 1st game of the season & was partnered by Pat, Following his week off to do a Forest Gump impersonation Si H came back to take the 6 shirt and was partnered by his better looking bro & Casper. With Dean B stuck in a queue at the chip shop Beno moved to 9, Beast wore 10 with JK & Charlie making up a formidable looking centre partnership. Browny was joined on the wing by the clubs new Lomu – Ross. Brad moved to his favourite position at the back.
From the off it became apparent that the Saras big pack were going to cause problems at the set piece. Luckily, Casper was on seriously good form and was pressuring the Saras 10 into some early mistakes. This led to the opposition 10 throwing a loose pass in his own half which Hands read beautifully to intercept and gallop off to record 5 (although the typical Hand celebration & good sportsmanship towards the opposition started a little early – on the half way line). Beast kicked one to make it 0-7. The Saras pack were rampaging & their scrummage, lineout & rolling maul was causing the Wheats some problems. At some point in the 1st half Wheats missed a penalty, 2 simple try scoring opportunities were also wasted,
i. Weaver charged down yet again & after gassing the other 29 players all he had to do was pick the ball up & score – unfortunately he turned into a monger & knocked on.
ii. After Aitkins had beaten off 2 or 3 defenders all he had to do was drop over the line, but he showed too much respect for his screaming pig skipper who called for the ball, but his fat fingers could not quite grasp the concept of catching.
Saras started up yet another rolling maul on the 10m line and went onto score a deserved try. Conversion good. So at half time the score was 7 a piece. Whilst the Wheats had the majority of the chances, the score line was probably a fair reflection considering the Saras domination of the set piece.
The Saras took the lead early in the 2nd half with a well struck penalty & the Wheats looked like they were starting to panic. An inspired coaching decision from Andy saw Bryant & Hibberd enter the scene.
With the Saras pack tiring the Wheats started to get on top. A couple of tricky (?) penalty misses from the Beast followed some good forward play. Following a Bryant rampage the Wheats were awarded a penalty close the oppositions line, from 9 to 10, miss JK as he can’t catch straight to Hands, ignore the overlap, few bosches & a score. 7-14. Alomost immediately from the re-start Aitkins fly hacked from within his own line, pinned back his foreskin & won the race to the line 7-21. Game sealed.
Similarly to the previous week, the side had struggled with set pieces & this is something they must improve on. This can only be done by people turning up for training (& turning up on time on Saturdays).
MOTM: Lots of contenders, Hands for his 2 tries and Loach for his formidable attacking prowess. However, award to Casper who was simply everywhere doing everything. If he continues with this form he may well be judged on a equal standing to his old man one day.
DOTD: Again, Casper comes close for his knock on. But for comments in last weeks report such as
1. Comparing the scorching wheats 9 to a tortoise & suggesting a loss of pace
2. Using the words big hits & direct running & Neil Hodgkiss in the same sentence
& thirdly, & more importantly for having such useless fat digits the award goes to skipper Hodgki.
