Rugby St Andrews 17 - 50 Old Wheatleyans
Old Wheats travelled to Rugby Saint Andrews for the second time this season, hoping to avoid a potential banana skin against a Saints 'development' side. With numbers bolstered by inclusion of the Bablake Rangers, and the returning London contingent of the Old Wheats, the manager was given a different type of headache to usual.
From the off it became apparent that Wheats had an advantage in the backs, the blend of youth and even younger youth looking very effective against the Saints seasoned back line. With barely a minute on the clock Wheats went under the posts playing some expansive rugby and getting in wide on the right.

In a shocking move, Wheats decided not to let up up on the Saints, and continued to run at them, rather than letting the experienced side come back at them, and proceeded to run at the Saints defence.
This brought them two more trys with no reply from the beleaguered Saints, including some neat footballing from Gillam who hacked through for his second try in two games.
Finally, Saints seemed to work out that they might have a size advantage up front, and given a scrum inside the Wheats 22 where able to put some pressure on via their pack. A sustained Saints forward effort set them up for their first try.
Following this setback Wheats came out flying again, with Brett and Birchy always looking dangerous in the middle. Wheats also did a (mostly) good job of keeping the ball away from the tackle in the first half, popping out plenty of times, though some where guilty of chucking the ball away on the odd occasion.
Wheats made several changes for the sencond half, trying to get everyone on the field. The game was put beyond doubt a short time into the second half by a lovely cross-field kick from Birchy which Matt Brown went up for in goal and got down for the try.
Wheats understandably found it difficult to maintain the pace they had set in the first half, but never looked as though they were in trouble during the second half. The game also lost much of the frantic pace set in the first half
as the Wheats forwards decided to take the ball on more up front, despite their obvious advantage out wide.
It wouldn't be a Wheats fixture without at least one player playing out of position, but to Gillam's relief it was Matt Lang who moved into the engine room in the second half for his first game in the second row, and went on to have a good game, getting around and recycling the ball to good effect.
All the backs put in great performances looking dangerous every time they had the ball, and solid in defence, with Rubes as ever putting in some good hits.
