What is the Northumberland School of Rugby?
Background
CB Schools of Rugby along with the CB age group squads are the building blocks of the performance development pathway in England.
The programme is designed to identify and support the development of talented 13 – 16 year old players who show the potential to be very good performers.
Each CB School of Rugby will deliver a programme based around a National
Core Curriculum developed by the RFU’s Coaching Departments.
15-25 players from each age group should be invited to attend the SoR which will operate alongside the existing CB programme
These players should demonstrate the potential to perform at the elite level and be drawn from existing CB Development Squads.
The focus of the Schools of Rugby is to develop core technical skills together with tactical appreciation of the game. Players will also be educated on the key fitness, lifestyle and mental components which will help them reach the highest levels of performance.
The programme forms part, and is indeed the start, of a single elite player development structure for the game in England, developing core skills away from the pressures of preparing young players for the next game.
Players might progress from the CB School of Rugby into the [CB representative XV] and may then progress on to regional, National or even] an England Rugby Academy Elite Player Development Group, to become a member of an England Rugby Academy
What does this mean to players, parents, teachers and coaches?
A School of Rugby player IS NOT in the Falcons Academy.
A small percentage of players will progress from SOR to Falcons EPDG. This is earned through hard work and not a formality.
A School of Rugby player is required to train for the CB squads as they are not guaranteed a place in the team.
Indeed they may not be at the stage of development where they are deemed ready to be selected for the CB representative side.
The majority of SOR players will be involved in area & CB fixtures but only if they train and become involved the same as every other player in the county. Players who do not involve themselves in CB squads may be removed from SOR and vice versa. As already mentioned some SOR players will not play for CB squads as they are involved for long term developmental reasons.
A School of Rugby player will have to be re-nominated each season by either club or school to remain in the programme.
The CB selectors and SOR coaches may also decide that a player needs additional experience with his school / club side or that his development has not gone as well as expected
Each player involved in School of Rugby will be nominated in May/June by their club/school coach. Only the most gifted or potentially gifted individuals within their squad will be nominated.
This is part of the ‘revolving door’ policy used where no player is in for life which allows us to monitor changes in physique, fitness, speed and playing developments across the 4 year cycle.
Those who under perform or are slower to develop will always be encouraged to continue to play and be involved in the game but MAY be asked to leave the SOR system for a period. This is not failure but part of the individual’s development and there is every possibility that, with hard work, they will re-enter the system further along the line.
