The outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 resulted in the Championship being put into abeyance although club rugby did, for a time continue. Interestingly, there was a match on Boxing Day 1939 between a Services XV and a Northumberland Clubs XV with both sides featuring players who had turned out for Northumberland in the previous season's Championship.
