Canterbury Administration - Statement
Statement from Canterbury and Sportsworld (NE)
Canterbury and Sportsworld have a joint sponsorship with Northumberland Rugby Union, paying £2,000 towards the County handbook, providing a set of County shirts, shorts and socks for the Senior XV, and sponsoring the County Leagues by donating 5 cups for their competitions; in total, a sponsorship package of over £3,500.
Two weeks ago, Canterbury Europe went into Administration, all sponsorship contracts were cancelled (SRU, IRU, French Clubs, Leinster etc.). Sportsworld (NE) Ltd will honour both the NRU County sponsorship deal and also the Tynedale RFC deal, which is similar.
Sportsworld (NE) is owned jointly by Danny and Andrew Hodgson, who provide this sponsorship because they want to support NRU and always have done so. There is no ulterior motive whatsoever. Thanks must go to NRU for resolving a recent dispute whereby a Youth section felt they were not bound by this sponsorship.
Canterbury Teamwear is now on the verge of being resurrected as a global brand which will most likely be owned by the Pentland Group.
Canterbury have always provided NRU with high quality products, including a set of strips each year and, most importantly, these have always been supplied on time. Player’s kit is always professionally sized and full responsibility is taken for laundry and storage of the Senior XV kit. In addition, the County kit man is provided with use of a van. Sportsworld (NE) believe that Canterbury will shortly be back to status quo.
Once again, Sportsworld (NE) would like to make it very clear that they support NRU in a big way and always have done so. In return, they would like to think that they have the support of all sections of NRU because, at the end of the day, it is all about working together.
