Golf News
Hornets Golf Day took place at Newquay on Monday, 28th December 2009, courtesy of Newquay Golf Club. Thanks to the them and to Dick Rundle for arranging the event. It was a great pity that he was laid low and could not be there to take part. A total of nine intrepid players took to the course. It was dry but a stiff south-easterly wind tested accuracy off the tee.
Miles Johns won the lesson with the professional. An excellent hit by David Pryor won the longest drive prize and Alan Plester won the nearest to the pin prize. And to prove the saying that everything comes to him who waits (or is it he), Plester won the event with a score of 37, a massive six points ahead of Alan Turner. He hardly went into the rough at all, and when he did, he got out of it spectacularly well, He put his win down to the encouragement of his caddie.
It was great to see Andy Carne with us for the round. He usually plays at Port Royal, Bermuda.
Thanks to Nigel Eustice for organising things on the day and to the nine who took part.
Golf Day 28th December 2008
Twenty-four golfers and one caddy turned out for the tenth golf day, organised by Dick Rundle and Nigel Eustice. After last year's torrential rain, our golfers had sunshine but they had to contend with frozen greens and a stiff easterly breeze as they set off around the course at Newquay. In fact it was shallow crisp and even.
In the difficult conditions scoring was low and Tony Watson returned an excellent score of 31 to win the Newquay Investment Services Shield for the second time, in a close run thing with Richard Ellery also on 31, but second on back nine score; they were closely followed by Dick Rundle, Chris Bunt and John Mitchell.
Chris Eustice turned in a a very good display to win the lesson with the golf professional.
Afterwards there was the usual social occasion in the clubhouse and sixteen sat down to enjoy a carvery laid on for them. Dick Rundle enjoyed himself so much that he was hanging (his own description of his condition) by the time he left at six o'clock.
Our thanks to the Newquay Golf Club for allowing us use of their facilities.
Just in case you have your 2009 diary handy. The next Golf Day will be held on Bank Holiday Monday, 28th December 2009.
The Surfer's XV are re-launched!!! Congratulations to all players and team management on this monumental achievement.
