Vice Presidents’ Lunch and League Match
We were lucky to have sunshine at lunchtime on Saturday, although it clouded over as the afternoon went on and it became very cold. Thanks to all the Vice Presidents who came along to see the Firsts complete the double over Minehead Barbarians with a resounding 45-12 win, scoring seven tries in the process.

The First XV should have travelled up the M5 to Tiverton on Saturday to play the fixture re-arranged from snowy January. Already doubtful after heavy overnight rain had forced a pitch inspection, another heavy downpour in mid-morning put paid to the third attempt to play the fixture. The match is not likely to be played for some time; we have a full programme of fixtures until well into April.

Last season we lost badly at Kingsbridge and we lost again this time. Having been only 10-7 down after twenty-five minutes, we shipped two tries before half time and it got worse. The try count ended up at 7-1 and the final score was 50-7.

It was deja vu at the Sports Centre as we struggled to capitalise on openings we made, particularly early on. Again we couldn't deal with a kick out of defence, and Services made us pay. It was a difficult day for the forwards too. They were unable to maintain a solid scrummage and key line-out ball was lost in attacking positions. So it was really cold comfort for the supporters. Devonport Services won 13-6 and completed a doulbe over us.
A young Colts XV took on Penryn and gave a spirited performance losing 8-29.

WIth the league encounters going with home advantage, it went Bude's way at Bencoolen Meadow in the Knockout Cup match. Two tries, one converted to one gave Bude a place in the next round.
Saturday, 6th February 2010
We were at Penryn to play a rearranged league match. It was a disappointing afternoon. Having started well, the set piece was again shakey as the game went on and we couldn't use our pace out wide as we did at home earlier in the season. Two first half penalties, one that we shouldn't have conceded and a converted try, that came from our error in defence, made it a 13-5 win for Penryn.
Saturday, 30th January 2010
Not a good day for us at Camborne in the league. We went down to a 49-0 defeat, and we were lucky it wasn't more as we were bettered in every aspect of the game by the league leaders.
The Seconds put up a better show at home. Against a heavier pack, we were denied enough ball to threaten them effectively and we lost the match 0-17.
Saturday, 23rd January 2010
All the teams involved in the matches at the Sports Centre found it difficult to handle the sticky conditions after the heavy rain of last week.
The Firsts got a hard fought 22-14 win against Bude. The win lifts us up to eighth in the league above Bude on points’ difference. Next weekend we travel to Camborne to take on the league leaders, who had a 5-20 win away at Minehead on Saturday.
The Seconds followed up their one point win against Camels last weekend with a 15-8 Merit Table win against Penzance-Newlyn Amateurs.
Having missed six weeks rugby, the Youth XV won their County Colts Cup match against Liskeard/ Looe 24-12.

It’s good news week after we sprang a real surprise on third placed Wadebridge Camels at Wadebridge on Saturday. We won a hard fought match 3-23. And what was even better the Seconds won 20-19 at the Sports Centre to make it a double. It wasn’t for the faint hearted on or off the field as the rain poured down throughout both matches. We defended extremely well at Molesworth Field, they chose to run the ball and they didn’t have a plan B. We played the right kind of match against them and we won. Brilliant!
