Three A XV fixtures were arranged against touring sides at the Sports Centre:
Saturday (11th)
An A XV played Avonvale, who were on tour celebrating their 125th anniversary. They are based at Bathford, near Bath and are currently second place in Dorset and Wilts 2 North (Level 8). The match was played in glorious sunshine and fourteen tries were scored. We shaded the match 46-36 with the try count 8-6. James Ingle (4), Rob McIntyre (2), Jack Hutton and Russell Milsom ran in our tries. Sam Cullen converted three tries.
We also plalyed Old Cooperians from Essex. They proved too strong for us, winning 22-24. Our tries came from Tim Grainger (2), James Greencross and Aaron McPherson. Ryan Johns converted one.
Sunday (12th)
A rather makeshift side took on Old Yardleians from Shirley in the Midlands. They play in Midlands 4 West (North) (Level 8). They also proved too strong for us. We went down 7-26. Tom Bazeley got our try and Ryan Johns converted.
Newquay Hornets Youth took part in the 7s Tournament at Launceston. Despite travelling with only eight players and suffering the loss of James Alexander through injury, the team won the Plate, beating Cullompton 29-24 in the final, to cheers, chants and Mexican waves.
Sunday, 5th April 2009
The Youth XV played Braintree, the Essex champions and gave a good account of themselves, going down 19-27

Vice Presidents' Lunch and League Match against Ivybridge
There was a very good turn out to the lunch. The weather was superb and it was a pity that we couldn’t finish off the day with a win, but Ivybridge defended well and exploited our weaknesses clinically to score six tries in their 16-41 win. More tries than any other side has scored against us all season. However we did get on the scoreboard, which we didn’t do in Devon.
After their win, Ivybridge are head to head with Wadebridge Camels for the promotion play-off place.
After beating Falmouth 60-8 on Saturday, Penryn look likely to step up to Western League after just one season in Cornwall and Devon, and it’s between Truro and Okehampton for the other spot.
Ivybridge Seconds proved too strong for a makeshift Hornets second string and went home 3-12 winners.
The Club Photographs were taken and have appeared in the press. The Mid-Cornwall Advertiser was led astray by the good looks of the Seconds and called them the Colts.
The first presentations of 250 Appearance Club Ties took place after the lunch.
Friday, 3rd April 2009
The Youth side entertained tourists Frampton Cotterell. The visitors were short of players and we lent them a couple. We ended up winning 41-5 and scoring all the points.
