Welcome to
Newbold-on-Avon R.F.C.
Newbold-on-Avon R.F.C.
was formed in 1894, a small village side playing on a field, with the local
drinking houses in the village supplying the changing and bathing facilities.
The reverend Boughton-Leigh was an important figure in Newbold and
served Newbold as Patron and President for many years. In 1957 the club moved to
their present ground,
at a cost of £4000. A
small clubhouse was built with less than adequate changing facilities but
importantly enough the bar was well stocked and adequate.
Newbold's fame
as a quality rugby side quickly spread around the country, it was not unusual
for Coventry and Leicester to frequent Parkfield Road. Newbold had several
golden years during the 60,70 & 80s winning several
competitions.

.
In 1960 the new clubhouse was
opened costing an almighty £11,000.
The teams operating from here continued in their winning ways, and on the
way a whole batch of quality players emerged through the ranks.
The Webb brothers, with Rodney
playing for England and his brother emigrating and playing for Australia and
more recently Richard Cockerill who played for Leicester Tigers and
England. A host of quality players
have and still emerge from Newbold.
In 1977 the clubhouse was
extended with a first floor gymnasium , doubling up as a huge function
room. A little while later
came the introduction of the merit tables and later the leagues and the
beginning of the professional era.
Social rugby at first team level
has ceased to exist in most clubs, this will never happen at Newbold, whilst we
play our rugger hard on the pitch we also enjoy the camaraderie off it.
Newbold currently play in
Midlands 2 West, two leagues below the Nationals.
It is a fine line between amateur
and professional rugby. Money
should not be the deciding factor governing the differences in the standard of
rugby at which we play.
