Year Summary 2003
The 2002/03 season will be looked upon as one of the most successful seasons of all time for London Wasps. A new coaching and fitness structure was put in place and the positive results were instant. Winning 18 of the final 21 games enabled The Black and Gold army to win the Parker Pen Challenge Cup and the Zurich Premiership, the first pieces of silverware since 2000.
Watching Lawrence Dallaglio lift the Zurich Premiership Trophy at Twickenham was the cherry on top of a very successful season. The final itself saw Wasps putting Gloucester to the sword. A try in the first minute from Josh Lewsey laid the platform for the 39-3 victory.
A week prior to that final, Dallaglio was lifting the Parker Pen Challenge Cup at the Madejski Stadium in Reading. Wasps had beaten Stade Francais and Pontypridd en route to the final against Bath. Three tries in the first half laid the platform for the 48-30 victory.
The season also saw Wasps move from Loftus Road to Adams Park. The move was a successful one as the Buckinghamshire community came in droves to support their new team.
The international success of our players was another highlight for Wasps. Lawrence Dallaglio found his old form again and led by example securing his regular place in Clive Woodward's team. Other players who stood out for England were Josh Lewsey, Simon Shaw, and Joe Worsley. Kenny Logan shone in what was a struggling Scotland side whilst, hooker, Trevor Leota had another fantastic season for club and country and barring injury looks set to go to the World Cup.
On the same day as England won the Grand Slam in Dublin, Phil Greening was captaining the England Sevens team to their second IRB Hong Kong Sevens title.
If you are a Wasps fan, the 2002/03 season will be remembered for a very long time.
