The score did not do justice to
a Wathe on Derne side who fought
valiantly and deserved more reward for their efforts against a Knottingley side
bent on redressing the unexpected previous weeks reversal against Leos.
Knottingley were able to field a
strong all round team for the first time since the beginning of the season and
the revitalised pack, with the advent of veterans Chris Walsh, Dave Stead and
Steve Taylor providing much needed beef and experience, proved too much for
their opponents.
Wathe shared honours in the first
quarter, before the stronger Knottingley pack provided the platform for stand
off Chris Turton to open the scoring with a try converted by Walsh. This break
through signalled a scoring spree which brought up 45 points by the break.
Into the second period Wathe
staged a revival and pressed the Knottingley line for 10 minutes, bringing out
staunch defence from the home side. The pressure was broken by a break from
Turton, assisted by Fox. From the resultant ruck, Wright broke through before
passing to Liversedge who provided the final pass to flanker Matthew Lund to
race over.
Veteran scrum half Shaun Jowett
provided a strong link between backs and forwards, scoring three tries into the
bargain.
An all round performance saw 13
tries scored, one each by Turton, Haigh, Shaw, Fox, Stead, Bradley, Liversedge,
Wright, M Lunt, D Lund and Shaun Jowett 3. Conversions were Walsh
5, Fox 2, M Lunt 1.
It was one of those days when the
moves practised in training paid off.
