Worms v Roundhegians 150406
Roundhegians 2nds 32 Knottingley 2nds 21 Knottingley were unfortunate to lose
in the last 10 minutes to the top of the merit table leaders in a pulsating
feast of attacking rugby. Both sides were evenly matched until at the quarter
mark, Knottingley ran from the scrum on their own 40 metre line, centre Liam
Bradley reversing the line running back around the pack before passing to Danny
Fox, who outpaced the defence to score the first try, converted by Mick Ward.
Roundhegians countered with their own score within 5 minutes, winger Nick
Thackery finishing concerted pressure by rounding the visitors defence in the
corner for an unconverted try. The home side went ahead immediately after when
Knottingley were penalised for offside and standoff Adrian Hogg slotted home the
penalty. Roundhegians continued their pressure and crossed the whitewash again
for an unconverted try by winger Adrian Robinson. Knottingley had breaks of 30
metres by Matthew Lunt, caught just short of the line, and a run by Fox, whose
cross kick to Matt Haigh was rashly adjudged to have been knocked on to redress
matters, but to no avail. Just before the break flanker Rory Haigh took a quick
tap penalty and ran 30 metres before being caught 15 metres short with no
support. Half time 13 -7 to Roundhegians. Against the run of play, Andy Seed
took the ball on his 5 yard line and passed to Fox, who ran 80 yards to score,
again converted by Ward. With the visitors in the lead Roundhegians gained from
slack tackling for Robinson to score again, this time converted by Hogg to
regain the lead.
Knottingley continued
to battle, and Seed made a 40 yard
break from a scrum before being caught just short of the line. His spectacular
overhead pass found Matt Haigh backing up
to score the third converted
try. 20-21 to the visitors.
At this point Knottingley were
reduced to 14 men, when Karl
Clayton was forced to leave the field with a leg injury. Roundhegians
made the most of this by mauling 40 metres to go over for another unconverted try, controversial
as the scorer, Darren Precious, had put a foot into touch
just before the line, a fact not reported by the linesman and not seen by the
official.
Knottingley were further
penalised when stand off Ward was sin binned for an inoccuous tackle.
Roundhegians capitalised on the gap and stand off Hogg went over for a try which
he then converted to increase the
lead.
Subsequent home side attacks were
thwarted by being blown up for forward passes keeping the score to a respectable 32-21 to Roundhegians. Ending the game with 13 men was
too much for Knottingley
to handle, and spoiled a thoroughly
entertaining game.
Knottingley backs Seed, Haigh and
Fox were worthy of mention, while the front row of Green, Matt Bradley and
Williams aquitted themselves well against a much larger pack. Matthew Lunt on
his return took the bulk of all
lineout ball. John Thompson, moving from the front row due to injuries did well on the wing.
