Report: For the first time since they started,
Knottingley vets turned up to a game short of players, mainly due to holidays
and injuries.
However,
Sandal kindly agreed to give them two props to allow the game to take
place.
Knottingley
were put under pressure right from the start, with sandal using their numbers
advantage well, shipping the ball wide at every opportunity, only resolute
defence keeping them out.
However, it
was Knottingley who scored first through livewire hooker John Hart after good
field position was gained through the reliable boot of Graham Steadman, he also
converted to give a 7-0 lead.
Sandal hit
back straight away with a converted try and also tagged on a penalty to take the
lead. This kick-started Knottingley
into action again and it was Mick O'Rouke who did all the leg work to allow
Derek Wright to squeeze in at the corner.
Sandal again
used their extra man advantage to score an unconverted try, the score at half
time being 15-12.
Knottingley
started the second half at a frenetic pace and used the wind well to pin back
Sandal. Second rower Rob Brain did
extremely well to send fullback in at the corner, Steadman narrowly
missing. Brain then increased the
score with a fine opportunists try from a lineout close to the sandal line,
Steadman converting.
Further tries
came from John Hart and Mick O'Rouke both goaled by Steadman.
This was a
gutsy performance from all involved given that they played with a man
short. Best for Knottingley in an
excellent team performance was Rob Brain, Derek Wright, Graham Steadman and John
Hart.
