Year Summary 2002 Unfortunately they lost their opening game away at Fylde 17-14, but a very tight home ‘derby’ game against Wharfedale saw Kendal record the narrowest of victories by 24-23 and give them their first league points.
Kendal's form was mixed and they struggled to find consistency in their performances, however only Orrell managed to beat them on their own soil at Mintbridge before Christmas. Meanwhile they recorded notable away victories at Stourbridge and Esher (through an injury time try), but especially their eight try Christmas feast at Preston on the 22nd December which left them riding high in the league.
The second half of the season saw Kendal really struggle to win a game, a good home performance against Stoubridge in the middle of February secured two vital league points to keep them out of the relegation zone - the last game senior coach Peter Kremer watched before his sad death, after a brave battle against cancer, just days later.
Kendal's determination to avoid relegation really showed in their performance in March against Wharfedale - the most entertaining game of the season - but this time they were on the wrong end of a 22-21 scoreline. League survival was secured with a 48-8 victory over Preston on the 30th March. |
