What's a Wainwright ? Alfred Wainwright was a celebrated fell walker and author who divided the Lake district into seven areas and wrote a pictorial guide book for each. He identified fells in each area and wrote detailed instructions with illustrated maps and routes to each summit. All 214 fells have since been identified as Wainwright peaks and have become a popular mission for peak-baggers. Here's a useful website for reference with each fell listed and photographed http://www.stridingedge.net/
Help for heroes is a charity set up to help our wounded servicemen and women injured in recent conflicts. "It’s about the blokes, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It’s about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it’s about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. It’s about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. It’s about Ben, it’s about Steven and Andy and Mark, it’s about them all. They are just blokes but they are our blokes; they are our heroes. http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/
How will we climb all 214 in 24 hours? Obviously this is quite a logistical headache so we need as many volunteers (members past and present) as possible to get involved. We have identified 59 routes, of varying length and difficulty, which encompass all of the fells. Teams will be formed and a routecard and ordnance survey map will be issued to each. A photograph will be taken on each summit as proof of completion.
If you have no experience of fell walking don't worry as you will be teamed up with somebody who has. Transport will also be arranged so this isn't a problem either.
How do I get involved? We will be approaching Club members in the coming weeks to identify walkers, back-up team assessing experience and identifying walk leaders. For more info speak to: Shawzy, Bobby Whitehead, Dave Mcleod, Dave Hill, Andy Wood, Big Archie or me Bryan McCoy. bryan.mccoy@talk21.com
