IPSWICH YM 86 BROADLAND 0
EASTERN COUNTIES 1 10/12/11
After a few tough weeks the YM put in the type of performance that everyone at the club knew they could. With the injury list continuing to grow the team once again had a different look to it with players in new positions and 2nd XV players getting their chance. As the game started with YM receiving the ball the home side got off to the perfect start as they charged through the Broadland defence for new number 8 Elliston to score under the posts. The next 10 minutes saw wave after wave of YM attack with Broadland just holding out. The YM crossed for the second try on 10 minutes when usual second row Cooke playing on the wing scored the first of his great Hat Trick. The YM continued to put on all the pressure and after ripping the ball from a Broadland forward Healey playing his last game for the club before joining Thames Valley Police powered over under the posts. The following restart saw the ball in the hands of YM centre Terblanche who got the YM crowd cheering with a fantastic run from his own half to score in the corner. The last 5 minutes of the half saw YM score twice more with Cooke getting his second and flanker Quinton also going over. This left the half time score 38 – 0 to the YM.
The second half started just as the first with the YM scoring in the first minute. After collecting their own restart the YM forwards set a fantastic platform for the ball to fly through the YM backs with Terblanche going over for his second of the game. With Broadland unable to get hands on the ball it was wave after wave of pressure from the YM still, and on 50 minutes the crowd was once again treated to a fantastic try with a training ground move working perfectly and Lea scoring the try of the game. The next 10 minutes were the best of the game for broadland with them very unlucky not to score in the corner. This 10 minutes of great pressure from Broadland seemed to take the last of their energy and the last 15 minutes saw the YM run in 5 more tries including the Hat Trick try for Cooke who put in one of his best YM performances completely out of position. With the final whistle the YM could celebrate a great 86 – 0 win which sees them hold on to a mid table position in their first season in Eastern Counties 1. Even with so many players out injured this result showed how far the YM is progressing as when these two teams last met under 8 months ago it was Broadland who were victorious. With so many new faces at the club and 3 sides playing every week things really do look good on and off the field and if the team can continue to put in performances like this they can be sure of retaining their place in Eastern Counties 1 for next season.
10/09/11 – WOODBRIDGE 1ST XV V IPSWICH YM 1ST XV
EASTERN COUNTIES 1
After the success of last season it was now time for the YM to take the step up to Eastern Counties 1 for the first time in many years. Even with such a good year behind them the YM know that they will be underdogs in every game and will have to improve even further if they are to stay in the new league. As the game kicked off this was soon seen with Woodbridge on the attack straight away and the YM unable to get hold of the ball. The pressure soon paid off for the home side as the live wire 10 left the YM defence for dead and scored the first try of the day under the posts leaving a easy conversion to take a 7-0 lead. The next 10 minutes again saw the YM unable to get much ball but starting to read the Woodbridge attacks and stop everything that Woodbridge tried. With the YM now starting to get more ball and put attacks of their own together it was now Woodbridge on the back foot. Some smart play from the YM forwards saw the ball reach YM 10 Terblanche and a well struck drop goal got the YM on the score board. With the YM now playing all the rugby it was not long before they had their first try of the day as Hall went over with Elliston converting. The last 10 minutes of the half saw both sides put together good attacks but it was the YM who made the most of theirs with a great try from Hockley on his YM debut, a well taken line out a few meters from the Woodbridge line saw the power of the YM pack put in a fantastic driving maul allowing him to touch down. The half time whistle went with the YM leading 15 – 7.
The second half was much more of a one sided affair with the fitness of the YM side really starting to tell and after only 5 minutes the YM had stretched the lead to 22 – 7 after winger Ford had ran in a great try with Elliston converting. With the YM now dominating most of the game Woodbridge were putting in some fantastic defence but on 65 minutes another powerful YM scrum saw stand in number 8 Potter control the ball with his feet and touch down over the line for a well worked forwards try. With the game nearing the end the YM scored the best try of the game with a training park move from the YM backs allowing Lea to take the ball and power past the Woodbridge defence to score in the corner. With the Woodbridge side now finding it hard to hold back the YM attacks the YM were on the score board again with Elliston bulldozing his way over the line to make the final score 37 – 7 to the YM. The YM could not have asked for a better start to the new season after this bonus point win and will hope to continue this way over the coming weeks.
