U15’s 2011-2012 Coaching Team Goals and Objectives
Soft Objectives
Player development
· Maximise the enjoyment of every player and foster a love of the game and a confidence to play it.
· Maximise the improvement of the skill levels of each and every player, achieved by honest assessment of players abilities at the start of the season with aims for development.
· Increase the versatility of each and every player and instinctive understanding of the game. Achieved through training drills and flexibility of positions in game play.
· Install an understanding that individual players have a responsibility towards their own personal skill development and towards the team collectively.
Game Understanding
· Improve thinking aspect of the game. Ability to play to a game plan, read the game in play and improve or change tactics.
· Knowledge of the Laws. Develop the ability to play to the limit of the law and not get penalised.
· Develop “support” awareness by developing the ability to get in the right place at the right time, in attack and defence.
Develop Team Ethos
Rugby is fundamentally a team game and a team ethos is essential to individual development and to performance success. To develop a team ethos we need to encourage specific behaviour and develop specific skills to ensure that a team game can be effectively played.
Attack
· Ball retention
o Doesn’t spill the ball in contact
o Carries in the correct hand/s going into contact. Makes sure the ball comes back on his side quickly.
o Goes forward on impact.
o Doesn’t get turned over!
· Ball presentation
o Shows the ball for support runners to anticipate.
o Knows when to keep driving to re-cycle and not attempt to off-load.
· Off-loading
o Controls ball and keeps it clear of tacklers to get off-loads away before, during and after contact.
o Aware of where support is
o Can deliver a quality pass at speed off either hand
· Secures possession
o Gets to ball carrier and secures ball that might otherwise be turned over
· Clears out
o Reacts quickly to breakdowns.
o Clears out opposition players at rucks.
o Stays on feet.
o Shows good technique and body position
Defence - Tackling
· Correct technique in executing a range of different tackles.
· Good footwork.
· Equally secure tackling off either shoulder or hand.
· Picks the right tackle for the situation.
· Picks the right player to tackle.
· Doesn’t get injured.
· Doesn’t miss.
Defence – Contesting Possession
· Gets hands on the ball when opposition player is tackled.
· Prevents opposition creating rucks.
· Makes turnovers.
· Makes interceptions.
· Secures loose ball
Fitness
· Need the requisite level of fitness to implement these skills in a game situation and at match speed.
Encourage Inclusiveness
Reward
· Applaud and reward desired behaviour in all elements of team activity (training attendance/ punctuality, training attitude and achievement, team play – esp. unsung team play such as first to the breakdown, taking and holding correct positions even when not utilised)
Training
· Skill training to include all relevant players in the squad regardless of ability.
o i.e. Kicking skills should be developed with all the backs developing them together
· Encourage more skilful players to help less skilled
· Avoid taking positional skills too far. Splitting between backs and forwards is sufficient at this age level and differing development stages. Creating specialists is exclusive.
Matches
· Give all matches “equal billing” in terms of perceived importance.
· Ensure all boys get to play to the maximum level of their ability relative to the opposition and the abilities of the squad
· Ensure boys have the opportunity to develop their skills in several positions within the a match environment
· Exploit Surrey League 40 point rule to bring additional players into those matches where appropriate (e.g. where we are at home and have won the fixture comfortably within 50 minutes opportunities to play additional players beyond the squad list)
Hard Objectives
Squad Size: Retain and recruit sufficient players that we can enter a “B” squad to compete in the Surrey Leagues in 2011-2012
Surrey League Position: Surrey League Position: First or second to gain promotion to Surrey League
Ensure competitive rugby for the following season and continuity of the team.
