7th March : Richmond 19 Haslemere 14 (League)
14th March : Haslemere 75 Alton 0 (Friendly)
Two contrasting results but a few common themes. The team is playing their best rugby of the season with the front five leading the way with terrific driving and support, the back row supporting and winning turnover ball and the backs using possession really well and, at last, finding the wingers.
The Richmond game was another close one and it was disappointing to lose narrowly again. We looked the better side for most of the match and it is so frustrating not to be able to turn our pressure into more points. The final 20 minutes, when we were chasing that elusive winning score, was our best 20 minutes of the season with forwards and backs combining well showing a collective desire to win. In the end we lost because we let their fast wingers outflank us 3 times ending periods of pressure by us with the disappointment of a try to them. For us, Will and Elliot scored two fabulous tries and Ollie converted both.
After the game, the referee was very complimentary about both sides and said we were some of the best he had referreed in Div 1. Nice that that is the case: now we need to win our two remaining games!!
Against Alton, we carried on the form of the last 20 minutes against Richmond right from the kick off. A catch and drive by Luke setting the tone for an emphatic performance. For the first time this season we won really quick ball which the backs used magnificently. We won many turnovers and most of our line outs. We had a few issues in the second half scrum but I am sure we can sort that out.
The game was a succession of tries perhaps the most memorable being the cross kick from Will into the hands of Freddie under pressure, then offloading to Dan for the score. Congratulations to Dan for scoring 6 tries demonstrating how effectively we performed in the back line to get the ball out wide and how lethal Dan is as a finisher. The other try scorers were Elliot (2), Ollie S(2), Mike, Adam, Joe. Ollie added 5 conversions.
