The traditional end of season rugby festival took place on the Bank Holiday Sunday, May 2nd.
The day began with the Awards Day for each of the Mini Rugby sections. The warm weather encouraged some of these to be held outdoors in the spring sunshine. The highlights of these are shown on the minis section of the website
At noon (or shortly afterwards, in keeping with the Rugby Club's tradition for timekeeping......), the Haslemere 7's tournament began. Sadly 4 teams dropped out within the previous 24 hours, but that did not prevent the 5 remaining teams competing in a revised round robin tournament. Eventually a team rejoicing in the name of Sussex Crusaders, made up largely of Horsham and Pulborough players, beat Seb's 7 36-21 in an exciting finale. Seb's 7 is named in memory of Sebastian English, and came back forma seemingly hopeless position, down 31-12, to force a close finish.
While this was going on, Paul Harrison, club Captain for the seniors, put out a team against President Mark "Arfer" Daly's invitation XV (or XVIII as it ended up), in a charity match refereed by Jim Close, dressed as a gorilla. The President's team boasted several junior coaches displaying their prowess, all clearly demonstrating to those they coach how NOT to do it!
At the same time Lynne Smith-White was very busy non-stop selling burgers and hot dogs.
All proceeds on the day were raised in the name of CRY: the final tally has yet to be completed, but certainly more than £1,000 was raised.
Our sincere thanks go to all those who supported us, players, organisers, caterers, bar staff and of course all our visitors. It is always well worth is and for a very worthy charity.
