PRESIDENT OF THE RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION 2008-09

I am delighted to wish all those involved in rugby union in Gloucestershire a successful and enjoyable 2008/09 season.
So many volunteers work selflessly for the good of the game within the county, ensuring that opportunities to play rugby are extended to all and I would like to thank you for your continuing endeavours.
After the success of the Go Play campaign, when a target of winning back or recruiting 6,000 to the game was exceeded by 57%, this season sees the Play On initiative.
Halting the drop off in player numbers as young adults move from school to higher education and into the workplace is a major problem for all sports. The RFU's response is a campaign that targets 16-24 year olds directly and Play On has a target of boosting player numbers by retaining 5,500 more young players
I am sure that Gloucestershire will embrace this recruitment drive and I know that this promises to be a very busy season both at the grass roots and professional level.
I have no doubt that young Gloucestershire players will feature at every level of the game and they will enjoy their sport thanks to the hard work of all involved in the county. I wish them and all the club and county teams a marvellous season.
Thanks must go to all the Gloucestershire administrators, officials and all those who sponsor, watch and support rugby in the county.
Have a great season

Brian Williams
RFU President
