Safeguarding Young People and Vulnerable Adults within Rugby Union Policy & Guidance, replaces the previous “Welfare of Young People in Rugby Union Guidance” document with immediate effect.

Please ensure that any future safeguarding related processes are carried out in accordance with this new document.

Club consultation

The recent changes within the RFU have been based on our very firm intention to put rugby at the heart of everything we do as a governing body.

Jez Allman, Head of Club and Constituent Body Services, said: “As it is our clubs that deliver the game, it is absolutely critical that we gain a thorough understanding of our clubs, the key issues that they face and their individual development ambitions which obviously impact on the overall development of rugby in England.

"In order to develop this understanding, our team of rugby development officers met with clubs around the country.
This has been by far the biggest project of this nature that we have undertaken, with over 900 clubs participating and giving us their thoughts. The feedback that I have had from both clubs and our field teams is that this has been a successful and positive experience so many thanks to you all for the invaluable input that was provided.

"We are in the process of compiling the information at both national and constituent body level, to make it understandable and meaningful. This information will be distributed in June of this year, through all our standard RFU channels, in time for the new season."

2011 Churchill Cup

Churchill Cup winners 2010

The 2011 Churchill Cup is now just over a week away, when newcomers Italy A will take on Canada in the opening game on June 4 at Franklin’s Gardens.
Current title holders England Saxons will also make their start to the competition on June 4 at Northampton, taking on fellow Churchill Cup founders USA in the second game of the opening weekend.

Now in its ninth year, the Churchill Cup returns to England from its traditional North American base for the first time since 2007.
RFU Head of Elite Player Development and England Saxons Head Coach Stuart Lancaster explained: “It’s a crucial competition for England Saxons, especially in a World Cup year as it gives Martin Johnson and the other coaches a look at some players who might force their way into the squad for New Zealand. We will look forward to meeting the USA again and with Tonga joining it will a great opportunity for the players to benchmark themselves against teams who will be preparing for and competing in the World Cup.”

Rugby Teacher
Development Days

Providing coach development support to teachers and coaches operating at all levels of the school and club game for boys and girls is vitally important to the long term future of the sport. Building on the success of previous years, preparations are well underway for the 2011 Rugby Teacher Development Days. Last year over 600 teachers attended the 16 regional events, taking advantage of the opportunity to discuss their thoughts on the game, and develop their experience and expertise alongside former England Head Coach, Brian Ashton MBE.

This year’s events will again be supported by Brian, who, together with RFU Coach & Playing Development Officers and National Scrum Factory Development Officer Matt Ferguson, will introduce creating play from turnover possession and developing safe and effective scrummagers. All events will take place in June and July and will provide an ideal setting for teachers and coaches to look ahead to the 2011/2012 season. Rugby Teacher Development Days are suitable for teachers and coaches of every level. As always the focus will be on how the coach can influence and develop the individual player to become an intuitive decision maker with the skills and techniques required in the modern high paced game.
