RFU Constitutent Body Send Out

November 26, 2010

Dear Tricia

Welcome to November's CB newsletter, there are 11 items that I would like to tell you about:

Message from John Steele

I would like to thank all those CBs who have hosted question and answer sessions with Martyn Thomas and myself over the last two months.

So far we have been to Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset & Wilts, Yorkshire, Bucks, Eastern Counties, Hertfordshire and have Essex (December 6) and Surrey (December 9) to come before Christmas.

These visits are invaluable to us in meeting volunteers and getting to the heart of issues that matter to the game. Please pass on our thanks to all involved.

We are keen that these sessions should not just be a ‘talking shop’ so we will follow up with the relevant people on specific questions asked during the evenings.

Diaries for everyone are presenting a challenge but the roadshows will continue next year, and I look forward to visiting more CB’s and clubs then.

National Under 17 Competition registration deadline

The National Under 17s Competition starts on March 6, 2011 with each CB nominating clubs to represent them in the divisional stages soon.  It is essential all players taking part are registered with their club on RugbyFirst prior to December 31, 2010, so please ensure you remind all of your clubs to ensure their squad is registered before it’s too late. Anyone registered after this date is not permitted to play in the competition.  The dates for the competition are as below:

Divisional Stages
Quarter Finals March 6, 2011
Semi Finals March 20, 2011

National Stages

Law variations in women's matches

In recent weeks, a number of clubs have informed us that referees have been applying incorrect Laws to their Women’s’ matches. This is by no means widespread; however, referee societies have been asked to remind their referees of the appropriate Law variations. The following link to download the RFUW Law Card 2010-11 may prove useful.

Constituent Body Conference 2010

The Constituent Conference Report 2010 has been mailed to CBs and clubs in the November edition of Touchline and provided electronically to all delegates. We trust you will find it an interesting read and reflective of some of the experiences and insights from clubs already living the One New Team goal. Feedback about how CBs are helping their clubs gain ‘One New Team’ is most welcome.

E-CRB Applications

The RFU Safeguarding Team is pleased to report that there has been a significant uptake in clubs applying for CRB checks on the new fully online system. In the first six weeks of operation 25% of applications came in through the new system. During that period the Criminal Records Bureau reported that paper applications took them 21 days on average to be processed whereas the online ones took 7 days on average. Several club applications have been turned around in 48 hours using the new system.  “The new CRB e-application system is fantastic,” said Alan Roberts of Old Cryptians RFC. “We have now completed three CRB checks all done in less than a week; I can take my laptop to the rugby club and do multiple checks at one time making it a lot easier to do. It is a vast improvement on the old system. Well done to you and your team.”

For more information or to get set up on the new system contact Chris Rawlings on chrisrawlings@rfu.com or 0208 831 7454.

JustGiving for Sports Clubs who are CASC registered

The JustGiving for Sports Clubs scheme enables CASCs to raise money through the JustGiving website without having to pay the monthly subscription fee (worth £180 per year). This helps clubs raise money online and makes it easier for them to take advantage of Gift Aid on donations. More information about the scheme and details on how to register can be found at the JustGiving website www.justgiving.com/sportsclubs. Please read the case summary based on how Farnham RUFC has made use of JustGiving over the five months, raising over £23,000 (including £4,000 of Gift Aid).

RFU loan and grants available for level 3 and 4 clubs

Clubs at level 3 and 4 can apply for grants of up to £5,000 for capital projects. The grants need to be matched on a pound for pound basis. If clubs are interested in applying then please make contact with your RFU Regional Funding and Facilities Manager in the first instance to discuss the project in more detail. The RFU also have a loan scheme that is available to clubs in level 3 and 4 which has the ability to make loans up to £100,000 to clubs for capital projects. Currently the loan scheme is interest bearing with the interest level set at the Bank of England base rate plus 1%, capped at a maximum of 5%. Again if clubs are interested in applying to this scheme then please make contact with your Regional Funding and Facilities Manager in the first instance to discuss the project and the process for application.

16-24? Your Game, Your Voice, Get it Heard

The RFU National Youth Council (NYC) is a group of ten 16 -24 year olds from around the country, involved in all aspects of the game, working to bring the views of young people to the attention of the Rugby Football Union. To kick start this, they have just launched a nationwide youth survey to find out what it is like to be involved in rugby union right now. Whatever their role, young people have an opinion and we want to hear it.  Please forward the survey to your youth members:

  Closes on Christmas Day.

Share some Christmas spirit with the RFU Injured Players Foundation

What better way can there be to give back to the game this festive season than to buy the IPF's charity Christmas cards? There is a large selection of many different styles available and 15p from each card sold will go directly to the Foundation which supports people who sustain a catastrophic injury (CI) whilst playing rugby. Available to order online, simply go to www.rfuipf.org.uk to browse and order online in plenty of time for the last posting dates. You will be asked to sign in to access a full range of customisable cards and calendars so that you can choose your own image and greeting to spread your personal seasonal message.

If you have any 'hot topics', queries or feedback about this communication, please contact me.

Kind regards

The purpose of the CB Send Out is to provide a single RFU/RFUW e-newsletter for operational communications from all departments relevant to Constituent Bodies nationally. This enables us to: reduce the quantity of email sent to CB volunteers, provide information in 'bite size chunks', ensure requests for action or information are volunteer friendly, and comply with the RFU e-day policy. You have received this email because you have  'CB’ role on the RFU’s RugbyFirst system. If you would like this role removed, please email rugbyfirstsupport@therfu.com and it will be removed on your behalf.
