To: Club Secretaries of all RFU Section I and III clubs at level 3 and below (except services and student clubs)
THIS NOTE CONTAINS ESSENTIAL INFORMATION ON CLUB INSURANCE FOR SEASON 2007/08
Introduction
This letter is to confirm that the insurance policies arranged by the RFU on behalf of section I and III clubs at levels 3 and below have been renewed with effect from 1st August for a further 12 months. Clubs at levels 3 and 4 should note that the liability policies apply for the first time for those clubs for season 2007/08. A full summary of cover is enclosed with this letter but for clarification the policies renewed are:
§ Personal accident
§ Referees and coaches liability
§ Clubs combined liability (public and employers)
§ Clubs directors and officers liability
Enclosed with this letter are the following:
§ A chart showing summary of cover for 2007/08 season
§ Forms to purchase additional voluntary personal accident cover for your club
§ An employers liability certificate
§ A letter evidencing that your club has Public Liability insurance
§ A questionnaire to enable you to obtain appropriate cover for your club’s property and other miscellaneous insurance
RFU arranged policies
The attached chart provides you with a summary of cover that is now provided by the RFU for clubs as well as the options for your club to purchase additional cover. It should be noted that this is a summary only and for full policy wordings and details of how to make a claim as well as other common queries, please refer to the new Virtual Adviser on the Community Rugby menu of www.rfu.com. I would draw your attention to some increases in benefits that have been included for this year:
§ Death benefit - increased to £50,000 from £20,000 (for adults)
§ Loss of (use of) two limbs/eyes - increased to £250,000 from £100,000
Your employers liability certificate (enclosed) must be displayed on your premises and you have a legal responsibility to keep a record of this certificate for 40 years. A standard copy of this certificate is also available for download from the Virtual Adviser unless your club is incorporated in which case the certificate must include the club’s incorporated title.
A letter is also enclosed as evidence of public liability cover. This should be kept for use in the event that you are asked to provide evidence to a third party that cover is in place. Again copies of this letter can be downloaded from the Virtual Adviser.
Voluntary personal accident cover
As in previous years, there is the opportunity for you to purchase additional cover for your players by submitting the attached form together with the appropriate premium. The RFU encourages all Clubs to give this full consideration. There are three types of voluntary cover available, as follows:
· Additional death and permanent total disability cover: additional units of £25,000 are available. A maximum of five units per team can be purchased (making a total of £125,000 in addition to the maximum benefit of £500,000 provided by the RFU). The cost per unit per team is £30 for senior/women’s teams, £20 for junior/girls teams and £10 per mini team.
· Temporary disability insurance: clubs can purchase up to eight units per team of £50 per week, with a deferment period of either six or twelve weeks. The cost per unit per team is £100 for a six week deferment period or £75 for a twelve week deferment period.
· Death by natural causes insurance: clubs can purchase up to five units per team of £10,000 per unit. The cost per unit per team is £50. Although this is a significant increase from last year, this is the first increase in premiums in over ten years and is due to changes in the life insurance market.
Property Insurance
We are aware that because the liability cover is provided centrally your club may encounter difficulties in obtaining stand alone cover for the clubhouse and other miscellaneous insurance. To assist you in this process, Marsh have put together a policy to complement the cover centrally provided by the RFU. We therefore recommend that you complete the attached questionnaire and return it to Marsh as soon as possible in order that you can consider whether the Marsh policy is beneficial to your club in advance of your existing property/business interruption insurance renewal date.
Risk Management reminder
Clubs are reminded of the importance of good risk management within their operations. A poor claims experience for the RFU-provided cover over time will impact on the ability of the RFU to continue to fund cover at this level. Further advice in this respect is available on the Virtual Adviser website (as detailed above).
If you have any queries regarding insurance issues arising from the above, please contact Marsh on 01732 877647 between the hours of 9am and 5pm.
Yours sincerely
Nick Eastwood
