Wigton RU Crowned Champions of the 7th Annual Cumbria U23 Floodlit 10 a Side Tournament
Cumbria Rugby Union organised the 7th Annual Floodlit 10 a Side held at Aspatria RUFC on Wednesday the 18th March 2009. On a pleasant evening on the west coast of Cumbria 6 local sides were in attendance after the late withdrawal of Newton Rigg due to travel problems on the M6.
After quickly reorganising the draw the games flowed freely with some exciting rugby being played by all teams. The event is aimed at the recruitment and retention of players who go to university to keep them involved with the club, it is also a great opportunity to play some younger players who are pushing for senior XV places at their respective clubs.
All games were fairly close and every team was looking to play fast attacking rugby throughout the evening, there were however some excellent defensive displays with huge commitment from the players.
Netherhall and Penrith looked like early pace setters winning their first games without reply from their opponents. However as the competition progressed Wigton & Workington picked up their consistency and Aspatria put together some good performances. Whitehaven fielded a relatively inexperienced team but did themselves justice by showing signs of their capabilities albeit in sporadic flashes.
The event is also utilised by the Cumbria Referees Society as a training exercise for their members. Thanks must go to the referees and assessors who were in attendance on the evening and contributed to some excellent fast flowing rugby.
Results of the games were as follows;
