Year 9 Cumbria State schools Finals
After a run of cancelled festivals in Cumbria the 27th January 2010 saw Netherhall Rugby club host the Cumbria Yr 9 State Schools Finals. The competition saw the best schools from each district in Cumbria invited to play in the round robin event. Logistics problems on the day meant that 2 schools unfortunately had to pull out, this included QEGS from Eden and Ulverston Victoria of Barrow. This left a 4 way fight between Keswick (Allerdale), QES (South Lakes), Trinity (Carlisle) and St Benedicts (Copeland).
A comprehensive display by an outstanding St Benedict’s side saw them win all games and therefore qualify for the North West regional finals as Winners. Some great offloading out of the tackle and slick handling saw them ease through the festival. With 1 regional final spot taken the other 3 teams were left to battle it out over the remaining place. Keswick recorded a last minute win over Trinity after some powerful scrummaging saw them push Trinity off their own ball to then burst over and seal the win. QES gained victory over Keswick with a try inside a minute of the start of each half after counter attacking from clearance kicks. Finally Trinity earned a victory over QES with a close game with only 1 try separating the 2 teams at the final whistle.
This meant that the three remaining teams had one win each and two losses, thus with QES having the superior points scoring record of two points took the second regional place available.
Host Community Coach Trevor Richardson said “Some very tough rugby was played throughout the afternoon and this forum is a great way for lads of this age to show off their skills”
The Regional Finals are to be held at Trafford MV RUFC on 23rd February 2010 and we wish both teams the best of luck as they represent Cumbria.
