Summary 2008/09
Cinderford exceeded all expectations to finish fifth in National Two at their first attempt. The Foresters won nineteen of thirty matches despite suffering a mid season hiatus of seven weeks inaction because of bad weather and the rescheduled EDF National Trophy matches of league opponents.
The season began with a narrow win against visitors Wharfedale and a narrower loss at Launceston. Heavier losses at Redruth and Birmingham were countered by good wins against Tynedale and Stourbridge. Cinderford won seven of their first twelve matches before the elements and the vagaries of cup rugby saw them left without a game from 29th November until the 17th of January.
A rusty team struggled to win a cup game against Hull Ionians and the following Saturday won by the odd point at Southend. Nevertheless the team grew in confidence as the days lengthened and finished strongly by winning eight of their last eleven league matches and also picked up the Gloucestershire County Cup along the way.
It is difficult to pick out stars amongst a squad where so many players, including those who stepped up from the very successful United/Development XV, grew in stature as the season progressed and no less than seven squad members represented Gloucestershire on the road to Twickenham.
Youngsters Freddie Burns and Jaike Carter hit hot streaks as the season wound down but it was Cornishman and blind-side flanker Adam Nicholls who scooped both the ‘Bob Beavis Cup’ for players ‘player of the year’ and the Cinderford RFC Supporters Club Shield. Prop Phil Kennedy lifted the ‘Carpenter Cup’ for the front- row forward of the year.
Danny Trigg was once again top scorer with 169 pts in league and cup. Paul Knight was top try scorer with 14 closely followed by Carter with 13 and Dave Knight with 12.
