new season begins there will be a match report every week so check back!
Saturday 24/06/06.
Team Building-Capenhurst RUFC vs Capenhurst Villa FC.
This excersise is one we try and arrange every year, whether it be cricket or
football, we have found it to be a most enjoyable occasion. Since we share the
pavillion with a football team and a cricket team, it stands to reason that we
should have some form of inter team contest ( Allows bragging rights for the
season ).
This year we decided on 4 X 20 minutes quarters beginning with football. The
footballers are a different breed altogether with fancy haircuts and their
six-packs. Our lads turned up determined to show the footballers that it is easy
to kick a ball around and look good, and boy did it nearly come off!
First quarter was a cagey affair as each tem sized up the other, until the
10th minute when a crossed ball from the footy lads right wing arrived in the
penalty box. A fair tackle by Paul Thornelow later and the football biased
ref blew for a penalty, luckily for us 'Big' Neil Ankers did enough to
make the lad put it into the north stand, high and wide. As the clock wore down,
the unthinkable happened. A surging run from Kevs lad Lee resulted in a shot
being knocked out into the penalty area, it fell to our very own Rooney, Ritchie
'the wok' Newsham, after a dip of the shoulder and a shimmy to the left, he had
spun on his heels and, get this, back heeled it in! To the roar of the cape
faithful, he wheeled away and performed his trademark shirt-over head
celebration. 1-0 to the rugby lads.
Time was blown and after a short break for lucozade sport ( yeah right ) game
on. The changes were rung for both sides and off we went, again the rugby lads
started off the stronger team, atacks were taken to them by Buzz and Bowers ,
feeding Ritchie and Lees mate. After one of these attacks we suffered a case of
the counter attack blues and dropped a goal to a powerful header by Cape Villas
centre forward Roy of the rovers. After a frankly poor last 5 for cape, we
conceded another penalty which they blasted over the bar again ( couldn't hit a
cows arse with a shovel lads ) sadly though we let in a goal in the dying
minutes of added time, through sloppy defending and our all-out attack
mentallity.
Now onto the rugby. We should have known from the start it was going to be a
whitewash when at the kick off they asked us "are you really going to tackle
us". From the off cape dominated like they should although the footy lads
defence was admirable they couldn't cope with hand off after hand off and Chris
'tourettes Fay was soon over the line. Ritchies hand offs are bad enough if you
expect them but when you are just a footballer trying limit the damage, they can
sting a tad.
I think that all in all, the seven tries we ran in were a testament to the
competitiveness of the occasion and everybody shook hands and shared a beer
afterwards but i think that bragging rights are Cape RUFC's for the forthcoming
season thanks solely to Ritchies superb goal in the football, he does of the
look of a Jimmy Greaves ( now rather than back in his heyday though!
).
