Welcome To The Home Of Capenhurst RUFC
Welcome one and all, this is the webpage for our superb social based club. Our club was formed in 1952 and i will hopefully have more information from the early years soon. I currently play for cape and have done so on and off for 13 years. The club has a number of stalwarts who have kept the club running through some rough patches but at present we are on an even keel. We play in the south cheshire lancs league 4 and are more than happy with our position. As long as we win more games in a season than we lose then we are happy. On the back of a fantastic season 07/08 where we finished 6th in the league, and semi finalists in the floodlit cup, we are looking to improve slightly and win the cup this season. Our end of season tour to sheffield was an excellent finishing touch to a great season.A special thanks should go to the guys at Stocksbridge RUFC for a traditional approach to our visit, the court session and boat race were awesome. |
About The Cape.
We are a one team, socially based rugby club, i say socially based because we embody the traditions of grass roots rugby. We are based at capenhurst playing fields and our clubhouse is at the sports and electrity club on capenhurst lane. We have good links with all local (wirral) clubs and a fine reputation in the league. New players are always welcome whether young or old, experienced or beginner, springbok or welsh.
The club is managed by a number of members, each carrying out tasks above and beyond the call of duty. This starts with Terry Grundy our right honorable treasurer. Terry has been with the club for too many years to remember and enjoyed a succesful playing carreer before retiring. Although Terry still makes cameo appearances, his main role is managing the finances of the club which he does with class. As with all clubs at our level, it is imperative that people like Terry are recognised and applauded for the hard (and voluntary) work that they do.Along with Terry we have Ted Roberts,Ted has, for many years been the most responsible person at the club, taking on various admin roles and liasing with the RFU on behalf of cape, this season though Ted is going to be on the sidelines after fracturing his collarbone in the second last game of the season. We owe a debt to our very own luke skywaster Graeme Ainsworth who takes on the role of fixture secretary with a stroke of his lightsabre at every AGM.
Many thanks must also go to our groundsman Paul Forster, his efforts to keep our quagmire playable are admirable and there are many teams that comment on our very own 'deep end' on the farside 22. Paul marks the pitch, cuts the grass and sorts out drainage problems on a regular basis and he is another of our unsung heroes without whom clubs like ours would not exist. And let's not forget the wonderful barstaff at the club, whether it be a loveley smile from our very own pamela anderson ( Enid ) or a chicken batch from club steward--"nonsensical magician, Uncle Phil".On a saturday after the game the wonderful staff at the club make it a perfect end to the playing day.The cape has been in operation for 54 years and through those years we have helped to produce some wonderful purveyors of our fine sport.
At present i can only write about the people that i have come across at cape but i know that there have been many greats down the years. From the almighty Kipper (downed 2 pints to my one in a tour contest) to Dave white of notre dame (whose hard earned hump now sits firmly atop his shoulders), a first rate prop who could hold up scrums and down a pint at the same time.We have had connections with coaches of the highest standard, one being Steve Dorrington currently coaching the forwards at cheshire, having just won the counties cup with them, shows the calibre of people that capenhurst rufc attracts. I think as much as the rugby side of things attracts people here, the social side is even more of an attraction, we are a club that thrives on team spirit and inclusion for all.
Cliques are not allowed at cape, however we do have a fine selection of 'old farts', most of whom have spent 15 years plus here, up to 29 years in some cases. Over the last year we have been developing a Junior side at Capenhurst, with a 13 week pre season this term, we are hoping to make an impact on the halbro colts league E. We are welcoming juniors to the world of rugby union and so far we hav been lucky enough to have found a few gems.

Season 2008/09.
The new season looks promising, with a number of young players firmly establishing their credentials as first team rugby players. John the farmer is a natural predator on the pitch and work-rate and tackling ability is the key to his game, then we have Big Kieran the farmer who has the strength of an ox and the brain of a bull. The front row is as strong as ever and there won't be much ground given from our pack. The props were awesome last season and i think all opposing front rowers would testify to that fact.Players player from last year, Lee Marlowe will be looking to up the try count and push the greedy bastads for top try scorer. Matty 'the sloth' tessuti will be pushing the front row for a place so be warned.
The most exciting changes for Cape are in the back three quarters with a dramatic drop in the average age and a southern hemisphere take on the game. The addition last year of Pete 'the bullet' Henstock has been followed this time with two, yes two sprinbok Habana wannabes.Brothers grim (and they are grim) Dave and Matt. Dave reckons that he regularly tw**ted Habana at swingball when they used to play together at Butlins in Pwhelli. Dave also reckons mr Habana would be a full second faster if he didn't let the side down and wear those Dynasty-style pads. "he plays on the wing for f***ks sake" Dave said, followed by "i speak for all south africans". You be the judge of that people.
The back row is the engine room of packs everywhere and we are no different, most tries come via the back row thanks to the tireless efforts of Chris 'tourettes' Fay (open side occasional 8) John 'deadpan' Fay (blindside) and Ritchie 'the wok' Newsham, the latter being a number 8 with a lethal blend of short, squat power and raw aggression.Although tourettes is the prominent try scorer in the back row ,this is thanks to the coheshion shown by all three, coupled with extensive rugby experience (over 40 years playing experience between them). John the farmer looked good last season as did Lee Marlowe so the competition is intense in the back row
We now have a set of speedy and strong backs at cape, our backs are patient, intuitive and a well drilled machine. Led from the front by scrum half Paul 'buzz' Burrows, his decision making is not often questioned by teammates and the ability he has with reading the game is masked by his relatively young age.Linking through to the backs begins with the stand off , at present we have people jockeying for this role but i think Fozzy is the main man here. The inside centre Pete 'the bullet' In the outside centre position we have a couple of lads the first, Club Captain Graham 'bruiser' Bowers, his commitment to the cause and quick powerful runs add an element that cape thrives on, whether it be supporting the pack in rucks and mauls or standing in as flanker, bruiser offers versatility as standard. Secondly we have Scott ' the bull' Davies, a true England supporter he sings Jerusalem every week in the changing room before kick-off. This guy is the perfect role model for our junior colts and an invaluable team member.
We have a number of "Impact Players" at the club, the likes of Dave 'Chairman' Latham, Ryan 'in the navy so i dont train' Brennan, his bro Nigel 'i hurt my knee doing gymnastics' Brennan. The Bulls younger bro Lee 'the photographer' Davies and hopefully a few new faces this term.
