Welcome to Bodmin Rugby Football Club
Bodmin RFC was first formed in the second half of the 1880s and in this respect was the first rugby club to formed in the county. The first player from the club to represent the county was B F Edyvean, who was also the captain of the county team. All the games were played on the Beacon, the highest landmark in the town.
Unfortunately, the club disbanded shortly before the First World War and was not reformed until 1969. The President at this time was Sam Lucas whilst the Chairman was Owen Williams. Matches were played at the local secondary school. Shortly after this the club played it matches at Cold Harbour where the players were fortunate to use the Council's changing rooms. In 1977 the Colts side was formed to play their first ever season. In 1979 the club moved to it's present location on the outskirts of the town on land bequethed by Lady Clifden. The ground is named Clifden Park in her honour.
The Colts were given the honour of being the first side to play on the new ground. The club also acquired it's very first clubhouse which were site huts left by the constructors of the Bodmin by-pass. The current purpose built clubhouse was erected in 1989 and this has been the home of the club to the present day.
When the new English leagues were established in the late 1980s, Bodmin were assigned to Cornwall One of the South West Division. Unfortunately, the club has stayed there to this day, except in 1995-96 season we were relegated to Cornwall Two, however, promotion was acheived back to Cornwall One the following season.. The 1994-95 season marked a low point in the club's fortunes when crippling debts almost forced the club to close. Fortunately, a small band of volunteers worked over and above the call of duty wiping out the debt.
The Colts had ceased to exist in the early 1990s due to the fact that there had been no youth development to bring new players through. The first move to remedy this came in 1996 when a Mini section was formed. This culminated in the 2001-02 season when a Colts side made its reappearance celebrating with a 5-0 win away at Falmouth.
Over the years many players from the club have represented the county at various levels. The most honoured player to emerge and progress from the club has been Andy Reed who played for and captained Scotland as well as playing for the British Lions.
Currently the clubs runs three senior sides as well as the youth section with the occasional Vets game.
