Blyth 58 Seaham3
Bottom of the table Seaham visited Blyth with an under strength side which was a recipe for the disaster that befell them. Playing towards Newsham and facing a very strong wind it took Blyth a while to settle but once they did there could only be one outcome. Right wing Dean Langdon scored Blyth’s first try followed by wing forward Wayne Davie.
managed to convert a penalty but further tries from left wing Andy Barker and Number 8 Ryan Davison both converted by Blyth’s scrum half and skipper Tony Smithson gave the home side a 24-3 lead at half time.
With the wind behind them Blyth had no need to extend themselves as they gradually added to their lead. They took the opportunity of bringing on Graham Astley at hooker for Tom Barratt, Astley’s first team debut, Craig Turnbull replaced Steve Harding at second row and David Herron subbed for Andy Barker on the left wing. Tries came at regular intervals from prop Stuart Browne, centre Steve Hall, fly half Gregg Dawson, scrum half Smithson, left wing Herron while Number 8 Davison ran in his second. Smithson converted a further two and with 10 tries to a penalty it was really no contest.
Blyth hardly got out of second gear but did their job with maximum efficiently. Credit to Seaham for completing the fixture where others might have asked for a postponement.
There are no league games for the next two weeks, but players and supporters are asked to watch the notice boards for possible friendlies.
