The Mighty Vths had their first home game of the season at Silver Leys on Saturday 26th September. After a tough winning start against Watford 2s the previous week, the team were more aware than ever of the need to ‘step up to the plate’ for this week’s game. Chess Valley 2s were one of the teams that the Vths had hard games against in the winning 2008-2009 season.
The game started with a very tight set of passages of play for the opening 20 minutes. Both sides kept close control of the ball, with Chess Valley having perhaps more of the play. However, Bishops Stortford then had a lineout around 20 metres from the Chess Valley line. After winning the lineout the ball was transferred from the forwards all the way down the line through the backs to the left wing before a try was scored in the corner. Mark Sellers stepped up to the tee and showed all his outstanding talents for place kicking. The score remained at 5-0 to Stortford. Chess Valley then kicked off again and within seconds another rapid combination of pace and passing between the forwards and backs saw another try scored. However Sellers once again showed his full kicking talents and the score remained at 10-0. Chess Valley got a try back just before half-time, and the second half started at 10-5 to Stortford.
Things remained close for much of the second half, and stood at 17-13 with around 20 minutes to go. However at this point Stortford moved into a much higher gear and romped away with the game in the last quarter. A series of tries and conversions saw the game end with a score of 43-13 to Bishops Stortford. A second win of the season sees the Might Vths keep their 100% start to the season.
