A combination of the 4ths and 5ths turned out for the 5ths against a scratch team from Stanford le Hope on a windswept pitch in Stanford. Although the game was clearly one-sided throughout, the mixture of age and youth that made up the opposition never gave up at any point of the game. There were a number of strong moves from the Stanford players that came close to tries and were only stopped by some excellent defence from the Stortford players. Even when it was obvious that the result would be a big victory for Bishops Stortford, the Stanford players were still clearly enjoying themselves and their older players were encouraging their youngsters to learn from the experience of playing against a strong, if rather aging, adult side! Such an attitude should stand them in good stead for the 2010-2011 season.
The Bishops Stortford team was made up of a combination of seven players from the 5ths and ten players from the 4ths, so perhaps this game should really be recorded as a victory for the 4ths. However the 5ths have decided to give their 4th team colleagues the satisfaction of knowing that they had a chance to share in the bright light of victory in a game for their 5th team clubmates. However the 5ths wish to record their thanks for the sterling contributions of the 4th team players who led the warm up in two different foreign languages, and then led the charge to victory. Tries were shared between a wide range of players from both the forwards and the backs, and Jonny Lewis converted six of the eleven tries from a range of locations around the pitch. Kev Green made his first appearance in a few months (hence the lack of photos from this game) and showed that he has lost none of his brilliance. Two tries came the way of the 5ths team mananger as he bounced around the opposition defence, spinning and bouncing again and again.
