Review:
For the first time of this season the Vths found themselves struggling to put out a full 15. The numbers wobbled between 13 and 15 for a few minutes before the team set off from the clubhouse, but in the end the full 15 was available. Some questions were heard to be asked regarding the likelihood of a certain Vic Goddard actually being able to arrive at Mill Hill on time for the start of the game without coming to the clubhouse first. However, such nefarious attacks on the good man’s character were proven to be without merit and we had our full 15 at kick off time. Mill Hill had suffered from some withdrawals and transfers to their 1st team during the morning, but again were able to put out the bare 15 at kick off time.
The game started slowly with both teams finding their feet, but soon the pressure of the Mighty Vths began to tell. Two quick early tries were rapidly followed by a third in the corner and the game settled into a pattern. Strong linking play between the forwards and the backs led to repeated tries for Stortford as everyone played a full part in this well deserved victory. Mill Hill did have some strong runners in their backs, and although there was a lot of valiant Stortford defence Mill Hill were able to go over for a converted try. Tries were being fashioned through strong forward play leading to excellent movement of the ball down the line of backs. A particular favourite moment in the game has to be the point at which Paul Head won himself the coveted title of ‘Clearly useless numpty twit’ of the match. As Cookie went driving forward with the ball and was supported by two other Stortford players, Headers came piling in behind. However the ball was sitting invitingly at the foot of the back player in the ruck and despite Cookie’s repeated shouts of ‘pick up the ****ing ball’, Paul was unable to comprehend the meaning of this and simply joined in the non-existent battle for the ball. A clear winner of this week’s ‘prize’.
This was an important victory with a high number of points for Bishops Stortford as we seek to overcome our loss to Hemel Hempstead and some narrow early season victories. We need to increase our success in games and score more points if we are to continue to push for promotion from the 5th division of the Herts and Middlesex Merit Tables in 2009-2010. Next week is home to Old Albanians.
