Bromley Festival - 12 October 2008
Record: played 5, drew 1, won 4.
Having produced a great performance in appalling conditions at Harpenden, hopes were high for the U7s in the sunny fields of Kent, and the boys were fired up for the challenge. Spirits were also considerably higher (and drier) on the touchline…
Not deterred by the prospect of 5 games against 5 different sides, the U7s started the day with a competent opener against Beccehamians (quite a challenge in the "three cheers for…" stakes!), ending at two apiece. Credit to ref Steve Williams (BSRFC coach) for having the moral courage to disallow two of his side’s tries – firm but fair. The moral victory certainly lay with Stortford.
From this point, the Stortford boys never looked back, going on to win all of their remaining 4 fixtures with considerable style, including a bloodless 5 – 0 win in which the Stortford defence simply could not be breached. In order, the U7s dispatched Old Colfeians, Hertford, Cranbrook and home team Bromley, getting increasingly assured with each performance. The final match was almost a demonstration game against a Bromley side that looked like a tough proposition until they faced up to the boys in blue.
No names need to be singled out – every one of the 11-strong squad played at least a half in every game. The BSRFC boys were without a doubt the best drilled in the competition, and had the ‘stats’ been available, I have no doubt that our turnover count was by far the lowest. In particular, the incidence of feet in touch was almost nil – in contrast to the opposition who fell foul of Stortford’s drift defence time and again.
Thanks go to the organisers and hosts at Bromley for a fantastic festival, Steve Williams as head coach and organiser for the U7s and to the kids and their parents for their enthusiasm and dedication – particularly after last weeks aquatic spectacular! Stand by for more great things from the other half of the U7s at next week’s Upminster Festival.
