First Half: There is something obscene about setting the alarm clock for 7am on a Sunday. Never the less as instructed by Shaun we were ready for practice pitch side by 8:40 (some 10 minutes before the first Fullerian turned up - & he was in charge of car parking!). Needless to say the early morning did not bother Jay who turned up ‘late’ but I guess early by his standards. Special mention goes to Bob & Geraldine who had clearly stopped on route to complete their Christmas shopping. Denis looked wistfully around the clubhouse & stated that he had been here before; but then again most club houses have a bar….
So to the match – a revenge fixture following last seasons Hert’s plate final & whilst the opposition towered over our boys we were assured that there was not an ‘A’ player in sight, although the second half subs looked vaguely familiar.
At 9:58 Stortford kicked off having won the toss (Stortford referees please note). The first 15 minutes was played entirely in Fullerians half but frustratingly we were not able to capitalize on the possession with a fine run by Bryce falling just short & disallowed due to a double move. However a couple of minutes later a powerful surge, again by Bryce & he was over. Beefy converted a fine kick, 0 - 7. Team really got into the festive spirit with the backs discovering that it is as good to give as to receive!
Again a period camped in the opposition’s half, great run & just short by Derry, fine run by Andy G. Then Stortford found themselves pinned back on their own try line, good defence & a fine run by Beefy who scored right under the posts (having run horizontally almost as far as vertically) to ensure an easy conversion – 0 - 14. Powerful scrums turned over the ball / won own time after time although lineouts were more difficult given the oppositions height advantage. Tremendous forward play with strong performances by Mitchell, Roberts, Gemmill, Gallop, Joyce & Finnegan.
Short period when Stortford relaxed & 7 minutes from half time, against the run of play Fullerians scored & converted following missed tackles by our boys 7 – 14.
