Week 23 - Feb 1st
B Squad Away Fixture Against Wendens Ambo - This is a Triangular Fixture with Newmarket (Venue: Friends School).
Newmarket v Bishops Stortford W 5 - 7 (Smith & Hughes).

Wendens v Bishops Stortford W 5 - 7 (Coppock & Hughes).
Newmarket v Bishops Stortford L 5 - 0.
Wendens v Bishops Stortford L 19 - 0.
A good day’s rugby for the B’s, thanks for all who attended (parents and players!). Out of four games we won the first two and lost the second two. The losses being down to worsening weather, coupled with injuries and general coldness. The narrow loss to Newmarket in the third game was as a result of unfortunate errors and defeat was really undeserved. By the final game, we had quite a few players missing and many were out of position (by quite some margin).
Player of the week is Zak Coppock for outstanding effort and tackling.
Coming a very close second were Derry Joyce, Tom Kingham and Brandon Bowden.
The home training session saw great effort put in by all who attended, in what was a different and tough session.
The session saw another lad join this weekend, though by the look of him, his family have held him back in years (one could be mistaken in thinking he was Nigerian). He turned up without supervision in his new kit (no molly coddling there) and he wasn’t shy in getting stuck in – just that nobody told how to. He seemed to enjoy the session, going home as sparkling clean as when he arrived, so no pressure on the family to wash his kit, just refold it. Joining part way through a season can be a daunting experience, but I’m sure everyone will make him feel welcome. Oh and his name – Heath Greenall, a new addition to our coaching team.
At the request of Malone RFC, a team photo was taken of the A squad, selected for the Belfast tournament. This will feature in the Festival Programme.

Week 22 - Jan 25th
Training as normal - Fire Station pitches.
What a great turn out; 32 boys on one of the wettest mornings for some time. Thanks to those of you that came to support the monthly player of the month awards that our mini/midi chairman is putting significant effort into. The U12s winners were George Hogan and Marko Cubric. Well done to both boys.
Don’t forget, the awards are for good play, best development, etc, not necessarily the best player; so they are open to everyone within the age group. We had another new boy start on Sunday; known to one or two of the Birchwood boys, Tyler Morton – looks like a very promising player.

-
Week 15 – Dec 7th
A & B Squads Home Fixture Against Old Alleynians.
Bishops Stortford A's v Old Alleynians A's W 20 - 0 (Dodds x2, Malins & Hogan).
OAs were certainly fired up. The pack was probably the biggest, strongest and most technically able our boys have faced. Whilst the boys up front had a tough 40 minutes, they kept battling away and, despite losing the balance of the scrums, secured enough ball to enable the backs to do their usual and put away 3 tries in the first half. Doddsy had an excellent game scoring the first two tries (although Patton tried to claim one of them after the ball had been touched down-it was probably the unsure look on the ref’s face that he made sure!). Another try late in the first half by Malins really took the wind out of the OA sails and sealed the result in the first 20 minutes.
The second half was equally tough but relatively comfortable for the Stortford boys. They defended their try line with great passion and fight, kicked for territory and still had enough left in the tank for Hogan to power over in the corner late in the match.
Bishops Stortford B's v Old Alleynians B's L 10 - 25 (Hughes & Berry).
The B's put in a great first half performance, being level 10-10 after the first 20 minutes. Mass substitutions at half time (10 I think!) changed the match completely and OAs ran in 3 more tries. Far from an ideal approach for the coaches or the boys, but a large number of boys got match time (everyone who was available).

New Player of The Month Award Announced – Nov 27th
A new award has been introduced by our mini/midi Chairman Geoff Pedersen; the Player of the Month (PoM) award is not necessarily for the best player in a team or squad, it can be for development, most improved, most sporting behaviour etc.
The U12 Coaching team recently considered a number of boys for the award from several different categories. We eventually decided that our award this month was for a boy who has moved from the backs to the forwards this season (not necessarily with his full agreement, but his Dad fully supported our decision!).
The boy in question was ‘thrown in at the deep end’ at number 8 in the first festival of the season at Bromley. An injury to George Hogan in the second pool game was a big blow to the A team, but Teddy King stepped up to the mark and played an outstanding role at No. 8 for the rest of the festival and helped the boys retain their Cup Winners title.
Well done and congratulations; U12s Player of the Month goes to Teddy King.
-
Tour Squads Announcement – Nov 27th
The part the boys have been waiting for; 'am I touring and, if so, am I going to Belfast (A team) or Nottingham (B team)'.
Given the number of boys that want to tour (which really is great news) we have endeavoured to make each squad as large as is reasonably practicable. So here goes;
A-Team to Belfast - April 3rd to 6th 2009.
Pratt, Maguire, Banner-Eve, Greenall, Hogan, Mitchell B., King, Patton, Malins, Dodds, Oliver, Calder, Train, Jefcoate & Silk.
B-team to Nottingham (Twickenham qualifier) - April 9th to 11th 2009.
Joyce, Gemmill, Smith, Palmer, Berry, Kingham, Pugh, Renouf, Coppock, Cubric, Power, Bowden, Brown O., Brown C., Pearsons, Schalow, Hughes & Moore.
Tours' Meeting - Essential
There are many things we need to discuss and agree about the tours now; these include kit purchasing, hotel bookings and travel and the tour itineraries. The plan is to meet at the club this coming Tuesday evening at 8pm in the Rose Room (booking to be confirmed). After the initial meeting/presentation to the entire group. we will then split into A and B suqads to agree the points relevant to each group. Finally, or may be firstly, we will need to slect a B-team Tour Manager; so any voluteers please?
-
Week 13 – Nov 23rd
A & B squads Home Fixture against Chelmsford.
Bishops Stortford A's V Chelmsford A's W - 20 - 0 (Hogan x4 & Dodds x2).
The A-team put in another strong performance in the worst conditions we have experienced for some time. After a tight start against their much bigger pack, the Stortford boys' superior fitness and technical ability came to the fore, to secure a 30-0 win. Man-of-the-match Hogan scored 4 tries (including 2 long range solo efforts) and Dodds scored the other two (including a kick and chase).
Bishops Stortford B's Vs Chelmsford Mixed A/B's D 10 - 10 (Braithwaite & Dodds).
The B-team, playing against a Chelmsford A/B team put in a great performance to come back from 10-0 down to earn a 10-10 draw. The half time addition of Patton made an impact and his quick ball from the break down, helped Braithwaite score an excellent try. In the last 5 minutes Wyatt walked off leaving the team with 12 on the field (this was normal to Coach Palmer!). CP then put Dodds on the field and he marked his B-team debut on the wing with a last play try to level the scores.

Week 12 – Nov 16th
B squad Home Fixture against Colchester.
(Provisional game results - pending coaches match reports).
Bishops Stortford B's v Colchester B's W 10 - 5.
Bishops Stortford B's v Colchester B's L 5 - 10.
Bishops Stortford B's v Colchester B's W 10 - 5.
Those not selected for the squad - NO TRAINING this week.
-
Week 11 – Nov 9th
A & B Squads Home Fixture against Saracens Amateurs.
Bishops Stortford A's v Saracens A's W 15 - 0 (Dodds, Hogan & Banner-Eve).
The A team were a little surprised about how aggressive the Sarries boys were and started slowly, being held 0-0 at half time. The half time substitutions saw ‘normal service’ resumed, with Hogan, Malins and Dodds coming on to secure victory.
Bishops Stortford B's v Saracens B's W 20 - 0 (Coppock, Hughes, Hunt & Palmer).
The B team started more positively than the A’s and outscored them in both matches. I think the B-team are developing into quite a formidable unit and already seem stronger than last season. As they are already County Plate Champions, let’s hope they can do themselves proud at Nottingham Festival and qualify to play at Twickenham (that has to be the goal?).
A debut and great debut try from Zak Coppock helped pave the way for the two Ws. Running from inside his own half, it was great to see a forward outpace the Sarries back line and touchdown in the corner! Hughes, Hunt & Palmer each scored good tries (the boys seem to be having more belief in themselves, which is beginning to show in their performances) to complete a 20-0 win.
Bishops Stortford A's v Saracens A's W 20 - 0 (Train x2, Hogan & Patton).
In their second match, the A’s powered to a comfortable 20-0 victory with the in-form Train scoring 2 good tries, Hogan again demonstrated his sheer power to burst through and score and Patton with one of his snipping tries from 5 metres finished the scoring.
Solid A-team debuts from Tom Kingham and Andy Braithwaite; great experience for them and they contributed well in both matches.
Bishops Stortford B's v Saracens B's W 25 - 0 (Calumn Brown x2, Cubric, Palmer & Joyce).
In their second match a 25-0 win was started and finished by Calumn Brown (the second try being the pick of the 5), Cubric, Palmer & a rare Joyce try seeing the boys home comfortably.
Returning as a forward, Wyatt had his best showing for the club for some time, Cubric is improving all the time and the Brown twins (not sure what they had for breakfast) but they were outstanding in both matches. Oli Brown, in particular, never stopped working and his tackling and passing were the best I’ve seen by him.
The B's are certainly becoming a more rounded squad and I am sure a number of A teams around the county will get a bit of a surprise when they play them after Christmas!
-
Week 10 – Nov 2nd
Training as normal - Fire Station pitches.
We had a cracking training session, which was pretty well attended (31 boys). Guy, Jay and I thought it was the best session we have had this season, which finished with a very even sided match and some quality rugby. A number of boys tried a new position and it showed some interesting results (not sure about Nick Train as a prop though!).
Congratulations to new boy Tom Kingham (who is already making his mark as a half back) was player of the week. Mentions also to:-
· Ben Wyatt (returning to the forwards and looking more confident and comfortable hooking than in the backs).
· Marko Cubric (for giving coach Dodd's a fat lip!).
· Elan Hunt (who performed well under several high balls at full back).
· Adam Hughes (shrugging off several tackles and making some good runs, one finishing with a solo try, at 13).
· Patton (after monkey wrestling in Thailand, he landed at Heathrow and came straight to play rugby – what commitment!).
-
Week 9 – Oct 26th
Mixed team away to Woodford.

Those not selected for the squad - Training as normal.
Woodford v Bishops Stortford L 5 - 0.
Bishops Stortford v Upminster W 20 - 0 (Maguire, Kingham, Maguire & Joyce).
Great team effort today at Woodford saw the U12 B team lose the first game 5- 0 against Woodford A and then beat Upminster B's 20 - 0.
Considering it was to have been a B team fixture but ended up being a mixed scratch team, owing to many half-term holidays, had new boy Tom in the backs and the return of Henry Pugh on the wing they played superbly in tricky wet conditions.
Special mentions go to Teddy King and Brody Mitchell who played out of their 'wet' skins but man of the match went to Ed Palmer who brought his school No 9 game to the U12s for the first time and was superb.
Again, great to see all the boys getting good game time and really putting in the effort.

Week 7 - Oct 12th
U12 Bromley Rugby Festival – Sunday, October 12th, 2008.
The A-team to Bromley Festival in an attempt to defend their victory in the Cup last season. Having been drawn in what the locals called the ‘pool of hell’, Stortford put in some outstanding performances to emerge from their pool with a 100% win record. The only try they conceded was a last minute effort by an excellent Old Alleynians.
Bishops Stortford vs Old Alleynians W 10 – 5 (Hogan, Malins)
This was a great match; our boys were outstanding in the first half building a 10-0 lead by half time. Against probably the best team we have played for some time (they visit us on December 7th As & Bs), the pack were magnificent. Hogan at 8 was immense and Mitchell, making his first full A-team reappearance for a couple of seasons, was rock solid into contact and presenting the ball (reminiscent of Ben Woolstencroft; that’s praise indeed!). With his usual adept footwork, Malins scored a great individual try to leave the OAs stunned at half time.
In the second half, the contest was more evenly balanced and the last 2 or 3 minutes saw Stortford pressed in their own 15m, defending their try line. Again the forwards proved their worth but eventually OAs did score with the last play.
Bishops Stortford vs Edenbridge W 30 – 0 (Dodds 2, Silk, King, Train, Hogan)
Against a weak Edenbridge team, the boys cruised to a comfortable victory with new boy Silk scoring his first try for the club. Without playing particularly well, the game was stopped early in the second half as the try count reached 6. Outstanding moment; Hogy ripping the ball in a tackle and running from his own 15m line to score in the corner.
Bishops Stortford vs Cranbrook W 30 – 0 (Dodds 2, Train, Silk, Banner-Eve, Hogan)
Again, another comfortable victory with an injured Hogan still managing to score, although he did leave the pitch looking very uncomfortable. Outstanding moment; a trademark Malins ‘Garry Owen’ that Silk took beautifully on the wing (so technically it wasn’t a Garry Owen!) to run through and score in the corner. Oliver put a couple of good ‘hits’ in and made a great break from his own try line (despite suffering back problems).
Worrying moment; Hogan injured and out of the festival.
Bishops Stortford vs Hertford W 10 – 0 (Dodds, Train)
Local rivalries we reignited when Stortford played Hertford in our last pool game. Dodds scored within the first minute (just as he did at Nottingham) and then Train finished a well planned backs move with a powerful run on the outside to finish decisively in the right corner (just as he did in the County semi-final). Outstanding moments; too many to capture them all – Patton at scrum half, Banner-Eve everywhere, Teddy King played like a demon at No.8. Greenall was everywhere in the loose and everyone who came across him felt the pain.
Semi-Final - Bishops Stortford vs Bromley W 25 – 0 (Malins, Greenall, Silk, Jefcoate 2)
Playing the hosts in the semi-finals, Stortford cruised past Bromley with a 25-0 win. A-team debutant Jefcoate scoring 2 well worked tries from the wing. We had two tries disallowed, including a most outrageous one-handed dive by Train, which looked as good as any showboating try you would see on TV; the ref disallowed it because he didn’t like the try! Calder was sublime at scrum half.
Final - Bishops Stortford vs Old Alleynians W 10 – 5 (Silk 2)
In the final, Stortford found themselves up against Old Alleynians again. This was an outstanding matching with a high level of skill and commitment from both sides. As in the first pool match, Stortford opened up a 10 point lead, but a try early in the second half by Old Alleynians set the match up for a thrilling finish. However, the Stortford forwards completed a great day’s rugby, keeping the ball in the pack and playing the rugby in their opponents half to ensure Stortford continued their 100% record at Bromley and retained the Cup. Whilst every boy played their part extremely well, special mention to King at No. 8 – another sterling performance.
23 tries; 9 try scorers; Dodds & Silk joint top with 5; Pratt top tackler; Maguire a concrete pillar at every scrum.
