HERTFORDSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPIONS 2009/2010
Congratulations to both our squads at the Hertfordshire County Contact Festival! The Tigers played some excellent rugby in the Plate competition and narrowly missed out on a spot in the Final. In the Cup, the Lions built from a strong pool stage to win the Semi-Final against Old Albanians (on previous tries scored) and beat Hertford in the Final. Check out the match reports page...
Electronic Security Plus (www.esplus.co.uk/) has kindly agreed to sponsor our playing kit for the Nottingham Festival. ESP provides specialist solutions for CCTV, Electronic Article Surveillance and Access Control Systems. Many thanks to ESP for supporting our age group.
Next rugby: With the exception of the Notts Festival Bowl Final, training and fixtures have now come to a close for the summer. That said, there are still plenty of events going on at the club! The coaches look forward to welcoming existing and new players on Sunday, August 29th when there is registration and training begins for the 2010/2011 season. Have a great summer!

Summer rugby courses at BSRFC - weeks commencing 9th & 30th August
Bishops Stortford Rugby Football Club is once again hosting a series of rugby coaching courses during the school summer holidays this year. There will be Level 3 coaches available for all age groups. Our coaches will work with their age-groups to improve individual core skills, such as passing, tackling, and running together with developing team skills. Players will be grouped together according to their 2009 - 2010 season age groups with the content tailored for each participating age group.
The cost will be £100 for each of the four day courses (or £25 per day if places are available). For all courses booked after 30th June 2010 a 10% surcharge will be payable. The days will start at 9am and finish at 3pm from Monday to Thursday, weeks commencing 9th August and 30th August for our age group. Contact the summer course co-ordinator Jane Eacott on 07881931835 or by email jane.eacott@tesco.net.
If your child is unavailable for future fixtures or training, please let John Lilley know asap. In the rare circumstances that training or fixtures are cancelled due to weather conditions, the news will be posted on this web page and sent out by an e-mail & SMS blast to parents. No announcement means it is training or the game as planned. Selected players that fail to attend a fixture and give no advance notification to John will automatically miss the next fixture.
Welcome to the U11 (soon to be U12) web pages of Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Football Club (BSRFC). Here you will find all the main information about the age group and the match reports as we go through the season. We welcome new players, so if you were under 12 years old on 31st August 2010 and would like to see if rugby is for you why not come along for a couple of training sessions. They are held most Sunday mornings (10-12) and include general fitness training, improving rugby skills and usually a couple of matches. The great thing about rugby is that there is a playing position for all shapes and sizes! You will need basic rugby kit, including a gum shield and rugby studs on your boots, as well as a completed Mini’s membership form. Please contact the U12's lead coach John Lilley (see below) for further details.
What to expect
The U12s is an exciting stage of the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) Rugby Continuum which is the pathway of rugby Laws leading up to pretty much the adult game at U13. The introduction of 6-a-side contested scrums and line outs as well as adding in the full back means the game really starts to resemble what you have seen on television! Throughout the season there is a mixture of training, fixtures against local teams (mostly playing 2 or 3 teams) and festivals where the format is pool games followed by semi-finals and finals. The climax of the season is the Hertfordshire County Festival where we usually have three teams taking part and regularly feature in the semi-finals and finals. In the winter months, the weather can be cold and wet so please bring your children dressed appropriately with multiple thin layers under the shirt and waterproofs. On very wet days a change of clothing is also recommended. Playing kit is blue rugby shirts with a white hoop, white rugby shorts, and blue socks with three white hoops at the top. The BSRFC club shop stocks these items as well as a wide range of other International Rugby Board-approved kit and accessories. We strongly recommend healthy non-fizzy drinks and snacks on match days and during training as well as early nights before games!
U12 Rugby at Bishop’s Stortford
At Under 12 level, the emphasis is on enjoyment within a safe environment and allowing each player to develop their rugby skills both individually and playing as a team. Rugby is probably the most social of all sports and there are many club activities planned throughout the season including Fun-Days, BBQs, the annual Fireworks extravaganza and age group specific events. In past seasons, our players have played in exhibition matches prior to games at Guinness Premiership club Saracens which has close links with BSRFC. Many parents bring their children to watch the home games of the club’s 1st XV that play in London Division 1 on a Saturday afternoon. Club lunches before the 1st XV home games have also proved popular for entertaining friends and family. The social side of the season culminates in the annual Mini’s tour which is great fun for the kids and parents alike. Recent themes have included ‘Pirates’, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ and 'Star Wars'.
Getting involved
The U12s coaching team (see below) is a mixture of ex-players and parents new to the game. All have completed various RFU training courses and been Criminal Records Bureau checked. There are many other areas where we need volunteers to help keep the age group running strong including as a first aider, helping out occasionally with the bar or the club shop, or as a sponsor for match day items.
Overall, the U12s is a thriving age group within BSRFC where we have a good balance between playing some competitive rugby whilst enjoying the whole rugby experience.
If you’d like to find out more on any of these topics, please drop me an e-mail or give me a call.

U12 Coaches Profiles
John Lilley
John started out playing football for local teams whilst at primary school in East London before converting immediately to the oval ball once at senior school. His first playing position was second row alongside a certain Tony Copsey (who went on to play for Llanelli & Wales), then moved to the back row as everybody else shot up in height! Club rugby from Colts upwards was spent mainly at inside centre for Old Edwardians RFC where it came in very handy having the Eastern Counties centre on the outside. John has coached rugby at Bishop’s Stortford since the group was the U6’s (seems a long time ago now!) and has also coached athletics, basketball and football teams over the years.
Russel Hopkinson
Russel began playing rugby union when 22 having only dabbled with rugby league before. He recalls spending many cold and wet match days waiting for the ball on the wing or outside centre, but also the joy of his first try and the post match penalty that came with it! Russel also played hockey in the Herts, Middlesex, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire league. He swam to County level at U16 - unfortunately for the same county, at the same time and in the same event as Adrian Moorhouse (100m breaststroke gold at the Seoul Olympics).
Simon White
Started his rugby career at 16 when he was too old for the Harlow Recreation football league. Simon says this “turned out to be the best move of my life” and he went on to join Harlow RFC as a Colt playing at under 19 level. He very quickly established that Hooker was his thing as he was not quite big enough to prop and far too slow for anything else! Simon played at Harlow RFC until retirement at 34 spending his final season as Captain of the 2nd XV. Prior to this he enjoyed many seasons with the 1st XV including a London 2 league season going unbeaten and gaining promotion to London 1. Simon played in numerous Essex Cup finals including one when the team narrowly (and some say unjustly) lost out to Andy Munro’s Eton Manor. Several Eastern Counties cup campaigns and winning the Hertford Floodlit cup were other highlights.
