11 February 2008
A tough game was on the cards as Bingham travelled to Newark for the return fixture after Newark had run us close earlier in the season.
Again, numerous changes to the team meant a start for Huw Thomas with Andy Towers & Chris Packer on the bench as well as Jack Illston, at only 17.
Straight from the kick off, Keith Lowthian showed his tenacity chasing the ball and Newark players down forcing play to the Newark posts until an early penalty was conceded. Newark however missed touch and Ian Taylor ran the ball straight back feeding Tim Allatt and Newark conceded the penalty, which Tom Packer slotted over. A great start but Newark came right back and unsettled Bingham with sustained pressure forcing 2 quick free kicks, the 2nd of which Bingham failed to react to and the Newark Forwards drove over in the corner. A great touchline conversion put the home side in the lead 7-3. Chris Mason then had 2 good runs getting high tackled short of the line. The line out was taken and from clean ball off the top from Tim Allatt, Tom Packer had quick ball to attack the line, sell a dummy and go under the posts for the try. Tom converted his score 7-10. From the kick off, Andrew Gill gathered the ball and took play into the Newark half with Huw Thomas then taking on extra ground before a further penalty was conceded by Newark. Tom Packer again slotted over 7-13. If Bingham thought they had this won, they were mistaken as Newark put Bingham under pressure again forcing 2 penalties which were excellently converted bringing the game back to 13-13. Lee Fretwell took a crash ball in the centre and managed to keep control of the ball and play was back in the Newark 22 where a Newark forward was yellow carded for persistent infringement. This time Bingham ran the penalty and Tim Allatt got the try. Then from the KO, Tim made a great forward drive and after 2/3 more drives, Tom Packer was able to go over for his 2nd and convert to go into half time 13-25 up.
Newark turned round more fired up and again, the forwards dominated possession forcing over from close range after Bingham once again failed to react to a penalty. Missed conversion but the deficit reduced to 18-25. Good defensive covering from Mick Challans & Chris Mason returned good positional kicks from Newark and Bingham began to reassert themselves taking good lineout and scrum ball. After forward drives, Dan Bartram looked to get the backs going but fed back inside to Tim Allatt to score to get the lead back to 12 points. Jack Illston came on for Ian Taylor on the wing to make his senior debut. Further Bingham possession forced a penalty where the line out was taken and the following drive was held up. However, from the resultant scrum, Tim Allatt picked up from the base to get his 3rd of the day. Converted by Tom Packer 18-37. Andy Towers then came on for Huw Thomas and Jo Fisher on for Chris Mason. Bingham then maintained control of the game and began to be more expansive in the backs and from one adventurous move, lost possession which Newark hacked on from deep in their half and despite getting over the line, had the score disallowed for tackling without the ball. A couple of determined runs from Jack Illston showed his confidence and from loose ball, Jason Churchill picked up to Dan Bartram on the 10m line who took the ball down the 15m channel and put in a couple of dummies to score in the corner. 18-42. Mark Brenton came on for the last 5 minutes for Jim Singer as Bingham continued to keep a stranglehold on the game and, following a last second penalty miss, Bingham recorded an excellent away win, 18-42 against a team that had given us a good run for our money.
